What is the best diamond cut for an engagement ring?

Im trying to pick out a ring for my girlfriend. She knows a lot about diamonds so i have to get a quality cut on a budget

If you tell her you're going to buy a ring for your mom, she'll either figure out something's up or think you're a momma's boy.

If you can, look in her jewelry box or at the jewelry she wears. You may get an idea of what she likes that way. For most women, the cut of the diamond is something very personal, and if they've thought about it at all, chances are they have an opinion on which ones they like the best.

If you're really clueless, try to enlist the help of one of her girlfriends, preferably one that can keep a secret. She may either know or be able to find out if your girlfriend has a preference for cut.

If all else fails, go for a classic round solitaire. It's timeless, elegant and easily adapted to a fancier setting if that's what your girlfriend wants. Second choice would be a princess cut since they're popular and yet still very elegant and classy. Many women like them. I'd advise against any kind of fancy cut, including a marquis, emerald or oval, unless you know for sure that's what your girlfriend likes.

Definitely stay away from any heart or pear shaped diamonds. Women tend to have very strong opinions about those two shapes and unless she's expressed that she'd really like one of those, you're better off sticking with a classic.

I like marquette cut myself; you have so many to choose from;
you can get her a princess cut stone as well. Just an idea, pick a cut that fits her body shape as well as her personality.

I have a princess cut. This is fairly popular. It is a bit more prone to shattering, but this cut can also make the diamond look larger depending on the setting. Go for quality always over size if you must choose only one. A small sparkly high quality diamond always is a better choice over a cheap large yellow and dull diamond.

Get the trillion cut or a brilliant cut. They have a TON of sparkle to them.

My engagement ring is a princess cut, which I absolutely love, but it all depends on what she likes.

get a brilliant cut! it's round, classic, elegant, timeless, and fits the budget! it's also very beautiful. the square 'princess' cut is very popular right now but this is a ring she'll wear forever not just when it's 'in season'. the princess cut is very pretty i must admit but is also very expensive.
an emeral cut is pretty too (it's rectaqngular) and is very simple and costs little.

my fave is the Marquis cut. That's what my engagement ring is and what most of my other rings are. It is a beautiful cut, and is usually secured well.

If you want to get more bang for your buck, get a marquis cut. In order to reflect the light properly, rounds are much deeper, so you're paying for a lot of diamond that you can't see. The marquis cut, when done properly for proper reflection of light, is flatter than a round. So for the same amount of carat weight, you get a lot more surface area. The jeweler we went to showed us the same size diamond in round, marquis, and pear shaped and the marquis looked best.

Princess cut. It's the square cut. There are some others that look square but have many facets and called something like the cushion cut. I have a feeling that cut might be expensive, though. Look for one that is clear. So, many are cloudy! And try to look for a sale. And don't tell her you want to get her something for Mother's Day unless she is one or she might be a smidge suspicious;). Ya know....before my fiance proposed we'd talk about rings and whatnot, and I always said I wanted a princess cut....and that I HATED round diamonds. I told him that I'm kind of a picky person and that he should consult me before EVER picking out jewelry for me.

Well....he took it upon himself and ended up buying me a three-stone, round cut ring, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! haha. It's definitely not something that I would have picked out myself.....and I'm not even sure I would have liked it before, but it's undeniably a nice ring, and the meaning behind it just makes me absolutely love it!!!! I get SOOO many compliments on it. I seriously hate taking the thing off. He pokes fun at me because I always take off all my jewelry before my shower....but I put my ring back on before I go to bed, lol.

Don't stress over the 'perfect' ring too much....because I'm sure once she gets a ring on her finger, and you promise her a future, and all those compliments keep rollin in about the rock on her finger......she'll be ALLL smiles, LOL.

First try to find out what type of cut she likes, and you can see by the answer everyone is different. Round brilliant is the classic cut.

When you buy a diamond there are 4 C's to consider. Cut (more than just the shape), Color, Clarity, and Carat.

Marquis will give you the illusion of a much larger diamond. I have a princess cut and it is stunning. I would suggest also getting a dimond that is shy of a carat .9 to the naked eye looks like a carat and costs much less.

Rounds pick up the most light and sparkle a lot more compared to other cuts.
The center diamond on my engagement ring is a 1k round diamond, and it sparkles so much!
When I tried on the exact same ring, only it was a princess cut, it looks rather dull.

The best diamond cut would ideally be across the jugular. That way you can return it after you become the guy who tried to save his girl by applying a tournquiet to her neck wound.
