What is the best way to preserve vegetables in a refrigerator? |
I am a working wife. I alway have my vegetables turning bad, after 2 or 3 days from keeping them in a refrigerator, and making the refrigerator smell awful, how can I keep them fresh for the longest period? vacu-pack... put them in plastic bags ,,, Zip lock bags and paper towels keep as much moisture away from the vegetables as possible. What kind of vegetables are you refering too? NOt all veggies need to be in the fridge. Tomatoes belong on the counter. Lettuce in the fridge wrapped in a damp paper towel. Celery in cold water in the fridge. Onions in a bin where it is cool and dark, potatos the same way. You really have to tailor the situation to the veggie you are trying to keep fresh. All veggies are not created equal. vacuum seal these with one of those new gadgets. tuperware lockd ziplock bag wash & cutup ready to go and pack into ziplocks or airtight containers. They are ready to go when you need them & all the prep work is done! let me teach you an old fashioned and cheaper way. Wrapping them in newspaper to absorb the moisture. They can keep for a week put them in a plasit bag if you put celery in water just the bottom part of it it will last a few weeks, I don't know where you live, but I have found that this is a big problem for sometime now. I buy frozen vegetables a lot, the nutritional value is about the same. Make sure you read the labels and buy the ones without the sauces mostly (the more stuff in the package the more they have to preserve so the more strange name ingredients you'll find. With my fresh vegetables especially the the salad stuff I wash as soon as possible and dry, put in airtight container or Ziploc bag with paper towels and keep in crisper. Peace! VACCUM PACK THEM Some fruits and vegetables shouldn't even be refrigerated, like tomatoes it just destroys the flavor, leave them out on the counter you can cover a bowl with plastic wrap to keep the fruit flies away, also you should get some of those vegetable saving plastic containers, you want to get as much of the air out of them as possible. Those vacuum sealers are awesome and really the best and although pricey they really save you money in the end, not only for vegetables but also for meat and cheeses. You could even buy one at Wal-mart. keep them in the bin in the fridge. some need to be in a paper bag you can put them in a zip lock frezer bag, or you can get some containers with covers on them this should keeep them fresh for a about 5-7 days. Put them in a Zip Freezer bag ( plastic bag with no pores - good quality) and put your veggies in them. Before closin the bag squeeze it so almost all the air goes out ( air is the problem, it oxidies food along side with the help of bacteria) and then zip/tie the bags and store them in the container/drawer in your fridge ( usually at the bottom of the fridge). Make sure the veggies arent touchin the back walls of the fridge as they can sorta freeze and turn black and rancid. Good luck! Always works with me Salt frozen vegetables , always work for me.but , when using them , never defroze them , cook them frozen.this way they never get squishy and preserve all the vitamins. Eat them up. Just buy enough to last three days. Stop crying about it. Get one of those seal a meal food savers. They are awesome. I use mine all the time for keeping food longer in the fridge and storing bulk meats in the freezer. You can also buy some frozen veggies. Don't buy more than what you need for about a week of the fresh stuff. PUT THEM IN A CLOSE BAG BEFORE YOU PUT THEM INTO THE REFRIGERATOR.TO PREVENT THEM FROM SMELLING. call someone to fix the refridgorater put them in an airtight container with a paper towel to absorb the moisture. Set the right TEMP Put them in a zipplock freezer bag...They will last longer... I think : you dont have one of the new fridges?i have a maytag and it keeps produce fresher longer as well as meats.get a few tupperware bowls of different sizes and place your produce in them.they are cheaper than getting a machine to vaccum seal and easier to get into. hard surface produce like peppers and cukes can be cut up and stored like this.tomatoes need to be bought whil they are a little green so when you want one in a day or so take it out and let it ripen on a window seal vacu-seal and a zip loc on the outside for protection give Stanely the points. |
