How can I be a successful vegetarian, if my house is full of meat eaters?

I've read I need to eat nuts, what kind of nuts for example?

Are all vegetarians slim?

That's exactly how it is in my household, too. But I cook my own food, or ask my mom not to put any meat, fish, or animal-based product in food she cooks that I can share with the family.

Almonds are good for you, and peanuts to a certain extent, not too much. Generally, a variety of nuts, fruits, and vegetables should be part of your diet.

No, not all vegetarians are slim, but being vegetarian does help me keep the weight off.

No, not all vegetarians are thin. In fact, many new vegetarians gain weight when they first start out because they eat too many starches and cheeses. If your diet is smart and balanced, you can maintain your weight or lose weight if you want to.

The key to having a dinner that can please both vegetarians and onmivores is to make things that are inherantly flexible. Here are a few examples:

-you can make a vegetable stir fry, and in separate pans you can cook some chicken for your family and some tofu for yourself. Then each person can top their stir fry with their chosen protein source.

-if you make salads, you can grill a bit of meat so that the omnivores won't feel like they're missing out. You can top your salad with nuts instead.

-if you cook hot dogs or hamburgers for them, warm up a veggie dog or garden burger patty for yourself

-make pasta with tomato sauce, but save out a meat-free portion of the sauce for yourself and add the meat later for the rest of them

There are just a few examples--I'm sure you can adapt these ideas to your family's likes!

Have a converstaion with family members that you respect their choices of food, and you would like it if they can respect your.

The key is to make foods that both sides can love. example red kidney bean chili, grill veggie pizza,

Here is practical guide.

1) work out exactly what you - and your daughter (previous question) - need. example, how much protien do you need. -
2) work out how you are going to get those quaniatities, form a vegetarian foods. -
3) realize that vegetarian food is not restrictive, but more of a new and fun way of cooking
4) look for recipes that you can add meat to later, example chili. - this site has lots of recipes http://www.vegetataintimes.com
5) include beans and grains as major part of your diet, this will help you get healthy varity of foods, and fill you up and the other in the family

6) - have fun, this is not a prison sentence, this is just a new and fun way of cooking. -

7) If you sometimes you slip - thats okay, just get back to geting vegetarian foods.

Make this a new fun unting aspect in your life.

You can be a successful vegetarian first and foremost by dedication. Dedication comes from conviction; and conviction comes from education. Non of these afore mentioned virtues would be possible without compassion. I assume you have compassion for the welfare of animals as well as our environment.

As a side benefit you can become much healthier as a vegan than if you ate meat and diary. It seems you are concerned about getting enough protein. Don't worry, anything with a cellular structure has protein in it, which is just about any organic matter. As far as sources that are high and complete in protein you have soy, hemp seed, spirulina, & quinoa (usually I mix it in with brown rice). Also sprouted grains are higher in nutrients as well as brown rices and whole wheat and grains. Avoid processed foods and incorportate a lot of fresh fruits and veggies. Broccolli is about 40% protein.

As far as nuts go the best are peanuts and almonds. If you get peanuts make sure they are organic as peanuts are often grown next to cotton crops which get more poisonous pesticides sprayed on them than any other crop. You can also eat cashews sparingly as they are high in fat.

Best of wishes on your vegetarian lifestyle.

Stay Strong by being happy : )

Well im vegetarian and my whole family eats meat! When first starting, it is hard to resist temptation, since juicy steaks are laid out infront of you all the time and you can just imagine how good it tastes. But I have some tips which worked for me! Ive been totally veggie for 2 years :D

Ask the person in the family who cooks (or maid) to make the usual meal, but then prepare a salad and vegetable sautee. It will benefit your family because they are getting some important nutriets, and it benefits you cause you have something to eat!

Take charge when it comes to preparing meals. Give your family cook some ideas about vegetarian meals (tons on the web) without mentioning the fact that its vegetarian. When it is served on the people, your family might notice that theres no meat, but if the meal is good enough they will enjoy it and your family will enter a routine they eat vegetarian meals every now and again. On those days when theres meat you can eat the potatos that accompany it and add some vegetables ontop.

Pretty much you have to be creative! After my parents realized I was serious about this decision they felt sympathetic for me and started preparing vegetarian dishes more often (and no one complains!). So you sort of have to manipulate your family, if you know what i mean :P

It'll take a while to get in the habit, but make sure you always have some vegetables and vegetarian foods in store so that if you ever crave meat or theres nothing meat free for you to eat, you have a fall back plan.

And also it might be easy to slowly make the transfer. First cut out your least favorite meat, then your second least favorite, etc. Eventually youll have cut out all the meats hardly noticing!

Nuts are important for the protein! Beans aswell. So if you have a tasty mix of nuts and raisins, that will do the trick. And things like chili(without meat), bean soup and lentil soup are all delicious! You can substitute meat for beans or chili in your tacos and wraps, and as long as you add lots of seasoning, itll be as good as the real deal!

p.s. If you like indian food, definately take up the habit of eating it more often because they make EXCELLENT vegetarian (and alot of vegan) dishes.

Hope this provides some good advice and enjoy your new lifestyle :)

Well, I use to be like that. But if your parents are nice about it, they're probably willing to atleast buy you substitute meat, which taste pretty much exactly like meat (depending on the brand.) So when you're eating this, they might become curious, take a bite, and realize, WOW this veggie stuff ain't half bad. Also, you can do things like Meat Free Mondays. Stuff like that. My house of meat isn't that meaty anymore. In fact, my mom turned vegetarian too, when I told her all the benefits.

And almonds are very good for you. :D

dont go veggie if you want to loose wieght. i am a veg and like because im shorter than i should be i have a little chubbyness
hahhaha ok peanuts, cashews, almonds. but where di you read that? never heard of it
i would create foods where like you can add meat easily. like spaghetti, meatballs for them, not for you. no fish. eating fish is NOT vegearian. idk y people think that. or like tacos adn quessidillas, just eat them but with diffferent ingredients.

theres a lot of options. indian food <33

Well, a little lean chicken and fish once in a while will do you good. Many people are allergic to nuts, besides, they are fattening. :)
