Around what year was the 1st pierogie made?

I have to prepare a food that Leonardo da Vinci would have eaten! Since he was a vegetarian, I thought of a pierogie first!

The earliest instance recorded of a pierogie was in the annals of Eferestia a country that was absorbed by what is now Estonia during the High Middle Ages. The year was in an account of a wedding of the Eferestian prince, Misljnath in the year 839 CE.

Pierogi are of an unknown origin. They have strong links to Slavic culture. These Slavic and non-Slavic peoples have Pierogi as a part of their culture: Poles, Ukrainians, Romanians, Russians, Lithuanians, Latvians, and Slovaks. There is a definite similarity to Italian ravioli. In East Asia, similar food is served, such as Chinese jiaozi, Japanese gyoza, and Korean mandoo.

His favorite meal was Minestrone...why not make it?

BTW - he was Tuscan so anything from that region would be good!

doubt you can find the century much less the year it was "invented". Several vaiations are found in most slavic countires as well. Since he was a vegehead, the pieogi that old Leo ate probably did not have meat though some versions do contain meat like pork, sausage and ham.

I kind of agree with the first poster--make some nice vegetarian minestrone. It might not be an exact representation of how that particular soup would have been in the mid 1400s; however, I think you'll be more on the mark than if you made pierogis, which, while undeniably yummy, are more associated with Poland and Slavic regions than with the Italian Renaissance.
