Do you have to cook tempeh or can you eat it raw?

For example, could you just slice it up and eat in on a sandwich or would this make you sick?

No need to cook it, although I would suggest a lot of spice--it can be rather bland and cardboard like raw. The raw food movement has recipes for raw tempeh, and they claim its live cultures act like yogurt does by balancing your digestive system.

You can eat tempeh raw or cooked. Many recipes using tempeh use it in the raw form and I've certainly tasted some good dishes raw, including one with barbecue seasoning. If you are interested in trying a tempeh recipe, you could try this one with the tempeh raw or sauteed:

no, you don't have to cook it before eating it.

a lot of people claim that it makes them healthier to eat raw tempeh because of the active cultures used to make it. they say it's good for digestion....

I've never heard of eating it raw, and it certainly doesn't appeal to me, but based on the comments here, I guess you can.

I like it cooked either by deep-frying, stir-frying, baking or toasting it.

You can eat it raw...

It shouldn't make you sick, I think it just tastes "raw", like eating raw tofu would.
