What is some things a 14 year old needs to know about going vegetarian?

I need to know what i need and a few good things to get to eat because i do not exactly know what to eat.

14 is not a youngster and with the IMS class i take i might just know more about nutrition than this guy.

Teens can be perfectly healthy on vegetarian diets. The American Dietetic Association is one of the nation's leading nutrition experts and it states: "Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence."

To be a healthy vegetarian, include a variety of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains in your diet. Also, make sure you're getting enough calories; don't just eat low-calorie foods like vegetables.

This site has a list of vegetarian foods that are high in protein, iron, and calcium: http://www.tryveg.com/cfi/toc/?v=08sourc...

Fake meats are usually full of protein and other nutrients. My favorites are: Tofurkey Deli Slices, Nate's Meatless Meatballs, Gardenburger Riblets, Smart Bacon, and Morningstar Farms Meal Starters Chik'n Strips.

There's a list of other popular products here: http://www.vegcooking.com/guide-favs.asp

Good luck!

you shouldn't eat meat miley cyrus is a vegetarian she rox i worship her i love miley cyrus my fave song by her is Best of Both Worlds

No matter what you eat, the only healthy way to eat, is a balanced diet. You need carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals - and from a varied selection of sources.

No.1 mistake first-time vegetarians make, is just to remove meat from their diet. That would deprive you of your protein, and you need to replace that. Soy-products have a lot of protein, and are found in many great-tasting shapes and sizes - f.ex. tofu, which can be cooked exactly like most meats.

I reccomend seeking the support of an adult, to help you get the right nutrients and the proper variation in your diet.

well, i started when i was 11 *no parents are vegetarians, its only me* so i stopped eating meat completely for about a week. then i started eating teh meat substitutes, so i didnt like break under pressure. it only takes like a month before u just look past the things in the refrigerator with meat in it. all u see is the stuff u can eat!

i eat a lot of faux meats.
i like vegetarian "chicken" strips the best
they're good with "chicken" fajhitas and stuff.
basically eat the same things you used to, only with vegetarian meats instead of real ones.
also, a lot of restaurants fries aren't vegetarian such as mcdonalds. also, jell-o and a lot of gummy candies contain gelatin, which is animal cartilage. so just do some research :)
ask me if you have any other questions!

The most important thing is to eat whole foods (fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, beans, lentils etc.) rather than highly processed junk. Get a good cookbook, like "The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook" and avoid the convenience foods, and drive thru things fries and tots.

A Vegetarian Starter Kit from the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, full of nutritional info:

A good site to discuss things with other teens:

Congratulations and good luck!

This should help. I just stumbled upon it like a week ago. I hope this gets me best answer.

i went veg around 13.... you just need to be prepared to make your own meals, plan ahead more when going out and pay more attention to your food. you can't rely on pizza and fries just because they don't have meat. you need enough protein (although not as much as people who eat meat seem to think, half of them haven't actually researched what they eat, they just eat it....), iron, nutrients.... make sure your getting a variety of fruits, veggies, whole grains, adn proteins...

Good for you! It is good to do this and really good to do your research too.
1) You can find really excellent information on what you need to know from Veg123.com with an extensive download of more than 200 pages of great information. Quite an amazing job this man has done!
2) You can also get a copy of Laurel's Kitchen from the library or purchase one -- The first third of the book talks about why you want to be vegetarian and gives a good description of the foods you will enjoy; the middle of the book is recipes and the last third of the book is a nutrition compendium which is an awesome resource.
3) For great recipes you can also visit

4) You also have a very helpful community here with some very knowledgeable people.
Good Luck to you. You are on a great journey of discovery and life long health and well being.

The best advice you'll ever get is don't. However if you do you must at a minimum study as much about nutrition as possible. And I mean from textbooks not from peta.

And before my veggie friends start with the "thumbs down" don't bother. You're dealing with a youngster here, use your collective heads.

edit. I doubt it honey. and 14 is a youngster
