Can you eat gelatin and still be a vegetarian?

I try to avoid gelatin, but some of the vitamin supplements I take are coated in gelatin.

No gelatin. No rennet. No commercially grown organic produce. These all involve post-slaughter animal products.

If you can't find or even can't afford a vegetarian version of something you need, then what can you do? If you can easily find it, and just don't do it- you're a naughty little vegetarian! The vitamins I'm taking right now aren't vegetarian, I assume, but I'm not overly comfy with taking them so I'm going to check out a local health food store and try to find some vegetarian multivitamins.
Can the capsules be popped open so you can just take the contents?

No, they are from animal bones and there is no vegetarian alternative. either dont eat the pills or go cry

you can eat gelatin.
you just dont eat FLESH.
even though its ANIMAL BONES. its not FLESH.

unless your vegan thats a whole different story

nop u can not be

The definition of a vegetarian provided by the UK Vegetarian Society, which approves vegetarian foods is:

"someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits, with or without the use of dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products."

Gelatin(e) is a gelling agent derived from animal ligaments, skins, tendons, or bones. It is therefore a slaughter by-product and contains "dead animals". There is no such thing as "vegetarian gelatine" although vegetarian substitutes exist, such as Agar Agar, Carrageen and Pectin.

Many "vegetarians" define their own boundaries. Not eating meat the most important thing, so a "half-way house" is better than nothing.

You should be able to find vitamin supplements which are not coated in gelatin. However, if you have no alternative, you might have to make a small exception. I take gelatin-coated medication, and although I do not approve of the fact, I put my health first.

No gellatin isn't vegetarian, but you are still classed as a vegetarian, it mainly depends what reasons u are a vegetarian

No, gelatine is definately not veg(etari)an.

Try to find vitamin supplements in tablet form, not capsules. I'm sure they're out there somewhere.

I have been battling the same dilemma. I was taking Centrum multivitamins but they contain gelatin. I did come across a couple sites that sale gelatin free mutlis. Here ya go:

http://www.amazon.com/Vegan-Multivitamin...

http://www.vegetarianvitamin.com/shop/in...

Not all geletin is made of animals.

Because gelatin is made from actual animal body parts, then eating it would not make you a vegetarian.

What kind of vitamin supplements are you taking? There is this one called Superfood Plus by Dr. Schulze... I've recommended it in here a few times (people're probably sick of it by now). Anyway, here it is: http://herbdoc.com/p14.asp. Here is the nutritional information: http://www.herbs-hands-healing.co.uk/Sup...

Best wishes :)

Vegetarians don't consume gelatin.
If you were talking about prescriptions, i'd say ask for a tablet and if it didn't come in it, then get the gelatin as last resort.

Vegetarianism isn't about being a martyr and dying for your cause. If you need medication and there are no other options, then take it until science catches up with the times and has friendlier alternatives.

Vitamins, however, are easy to find in vegetarian formulas.

Vegetarianism isn't something set in stone. We all do it for our own reasons and have our own exceptions. Really eating gelatin is your decision if your a vegetarian and ok with eating gelatin then you can eat gelatin and still be a vegetarian.

i guess you'd be a gelatin-vegetarian kind of like those ovo-lacto veggies. you can get supplements that come in vegetarian capsules ya know.. try veganessentials.com

theres nothing made of animals in gelatin except that i have heard there is something in there made of horse hooves
