What do you feed your carniverous pets?

This is a legitimate question. I can assure you I'm not trying to be flippant or smart by asking it. For all vegans, do you feed your pets (mainly cats and dogs) traditional pet food made with meat? I'm mainly curious to receive answers from vegans who choose to be vegan because they think it's cruel to kill animals. Part two (for those of you who feed your pets regular old dog/cat food): Why is it OK to kill animals for your pets to eat, but not for you to eat? Don't you think that the chickens and lambs and ducks and whatever other animals they use to make pet food are treated just as badly as animals that people eat? Please don't take offense...I'm just curious. Thanks for all replies!

I'm neither a vegan nor a pet owner....

However, I can't imagine a vegan (for cruelty reasons) owning a pet. Consider that for millenia, these animals have been cross-bred and inbred to strip any and all wild tendency out of them. Then mass reproduced and sold.

Personally, I dosn't bother me. But someone who is a vegan due to animal ethics issues would be a bit hypocritical if they owned a pet.

This is absurd, I own animals and don't eat meat however I have the intelligence to know my dog does. My eating habits have nothing to do with not owning animals because of that answer. You loaded this one anyway. Report Abuse

I am a vegetarian but I don,t have a pet other than fish anymore. When I did have two cats I fed them meat because cats can't survive on a vegetarian diet.

Dogs can be vegetarian but I have never owned one.

I don't eat meat because I don't like it and with Mad Cow disease in Britain (I'm English) I stopped eating all meat. My cats did not eat beef either!

I made a decision when I had a child that he would be vegetarian but only until he is old enough to decide for himself. If I had a dog I would do the same feed it a vegetarian diet as long as it's health did not suffer.

Thank you for an interesting question.

Dogs and cats are carnivores by nature and would not be healthy without meat. Just because the owner has convictions about what to eat does not mean the animal has to.

"Dogs and cats are carnivores by nature and would not be healthy without meat. " Lie. Cats are carnivores. Dogs are not.

You can buy vegetarian pet foods pre made, or make your own raw diet. If you feed them a proper balance, just as it is with humans, they will be perfectly healthy. Cats may need additional supplementation due to their need for taurine, but you can buy this fairly easily.

Also, it's not hypocritical for vegetarians and vegans to own pets. That is of course, if they are rescued or adopted. You aren't having a pet bred for your pleasure, at the expense of one dying at a shelter; in fact, you are saving one from that fate.

I am vegan and do not currently have a pet however other vegetarian friends with pets feed them a vegetarian diet. There are new products available, however pets must be vet checked regularly to make sure they are getting all the nutrients they need. These pets are quite happy and healthy, and there is no need to have meat in the house.

Dogs are omnivores and there have been dog foods made without meat that are safe and healthy for your dog. You should clear it with your vet and make sure he gets supplements if needed.

Cats are a different story. They are carnivores and should not be put on a vegetarian diet. They can go blind and even die as a result of lack of proper nutrients.

To answer part two- pets eat mostly the same animals as humans. In fact, it is usually exactly the same animal. You can check a label of cat or dog food and it usually says chicken or beef "by-product". They eat parts of the animals that it is not lawful to serve to humans, but it is safe for them.

i dont no but go to pet smart its a good plase you can bring your pets there too.

For dogs - boil in water some vegetables (no potatoes, cabbage or onion)and a lot of rice and try it.
Also you can try with boiled corn flour (like a paste)mixed with milk or cream.
Dogs love fruits, ex: apples.
For cats you can find dry food made from vegetables.

wonderful question. Here's what I do; I made my dog some eggs or some well mixed grains with vegetables, usually carrots. He is a happy, healthy dog.
