Is it okay to eat a pinapple if it's extra-ripe and brown and slightly mushy on the inside?

Is it okay to eat a pinapple if it's extra-ripe? The inside near the edges is turning slightly brown almost to the point of being mushy?

The pineapple meat didn't smell bad so I ate it this morning and so far haven't gotten sick. ;)

I drink vegan fruit smoothies every day and need to know at what point it okay to eat and at what point to pass.

I would say that almost any fruit that doesn't offend your sense of smell or taste is ok to eat. Some are even better a little over ripe.

Chances are you won't get sick, but I am very squeamish about eating overripe fruit, and thus I wouldn't have eaten a brown pineapple.

A general rule is, if you feel odd or sick when you smell the food or look at it, you probably shouldn't eat it. There are certain visual and olfactory clues that help prevent animals from eating spoiled food, and discoloration, decompositition (mushiness), and strange smells are some of them. Trust your nose and your judgement, but it never hurts to be a bit paranoid--food poisoning is not fun. When in doubt, throw it out.

A good indication that your Pineapple is bad, is when it is slimy. If it is a little brown, and a little mushy, its O.K. to eat, but I would make a Smoothie with it, instead. since it is already soft, it will be easier to puree.

Eating this "kind" of pineapple is NOT dangerous for your health. The brown colour on it was caused by oxidation of the pineapple because I thought you let it be for your some time. And the oxidation process starts to work. Oxidation means when some chemical inside of some food (or whatever another object) reacts with the oxygen. So this is why your pineapple turned into brown. This same thing happen when you bite into apple or banana and then you just let it be. The chemicals reacts with oxygen so it turns another colour. But there is a protection against this oxidation. The easiest is one is to eat the fruit (in your case pineapple) the soonest possible time and do not leave it on the air or fridge. But the another option is to buy lots of lemons and sprinkle your pineapple (or another fruit) with this lemon juice. But be aware! Do not use the "fake" lemon juice from supermarkets but you buy FRESH lemons and you made yourself the lemon juice and sprinkle the fruit. Good luck!

Some pineapple are best when they are slightly overripe. I wouldn't eat it if I spotted any mold or bugs though- yuck

nah, you won't get sick, it just doesn't taste as good.
oooh I love pineapple smoothies! I buy fresh pineapple, cut it up and freeze it so it is nice and cold :D mmm mmm mmm
