What are ways to get vitamin b12 if you are a vegetarian?

Sure kid - would love to. Mind if I slice off a piece of your hind quarter?

Have you tried Marmite and Vegamite?
They are vegetarian sources of high protein with high count of vitamin B12.
Also, strawberries, mangoes, passionfruit, Swiss Chard, grape leaves, sweet potatoes, baking potatoes, yams, whole grain, whole wheat, multi grain, whole wheat rice noodles, black strap molasses, molasses, golden molasses, golden syrup, pure maple syrup, creamed honey, tahini, halva, sesame seeds, pumpkins seeds with the shells, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, red pistachios, black chestnuts, acorns, dandelion leaves and stems, pine nuts, parsley, spinach, celery seed, celery root, dark green celery, barley, wheatberries, black sesame, japonica rice, wild rice, brown rice, gluten, extra firm plain tofu, portabello mushrooms, rose hips, carob, rice milk, almond milk, carageen, agar agar, algae, seaweed, alkali, sweet cheese ( an Indian sweet ), coriander, cilantro, pumpkin, squash, grapeseed oil, balsam, shea, cocoa, Noni juice, flax seed oil, and karaya gum from Steculia trees.

The foods listed in the best answer are all very yummy and contain lots of vitamins, incl. B vitamins. However, not B12 unless it had been added (e.g. to bread or milk substitutes). Studies so far have shown that B21 can not be readily obtained from fruit and vegetables. Report Abuse

Nutritional yeast is loaded with B vitamins, and it's tasty.

i always just took the vitamin.

B12 is produced by bacteria, and cows and other animals that are eaten by humans contain B12 because they eat stuff that contain the bacteria.

It has been suggested that if we humans didn't wash fruit and veg we would also ingest the B12 producing bacteria, but that seems a little silly, since we'd also be ingesting all sorts of nasty bacteria too! Not a good recommendation, that one!

If you eat eggs and dairy products such as milk and cheese, you will get B12 from them.

For a strict vegetarian (a vegan), the only reliable option is to take a supplement, or look for food that has been fortified with vitamin B12, that is, the vitamin has been added to a food stuff that wouldn't normally contain it.

Breakfast cereals and soya milk are sometimes fortified with B12. You can also buy B12 containing nutritional yeast from health food shops.

I find the easiest way to make sure my diet contains B12 is to take multi-vitamins.

On the plus side, you only need tiny amounts of B12 and the body can store it until it's needed, so you don't have to ingest B12 every day - just make sure that you include B12 containing food in your diet regularly.
