Can you substitute baking soda for baking powder?

One website said that baking soda is for times as strong as baking powder is that true? It is 9:45 at night and my brother who is 15 asked me 13, to make him pumpkin bread I already mixed a lot of ingredents together before I realized we have no baking soda. My mom won't let me ask a neighbor this late so what should I do?

I do not believe the two are interchangeable in recipes.

According to the Southern Living cookbook,:

1 tsp. baking powder = 1/2 tsp cream of tartar + 1/4 tsp. baking soda.

Soooooo, I would say use 4 times as much baking powder and hope for the best. Either it will work, or be ruined. The way I look at it, you've already mixed it all up anyway. Good luck.

No but if you have cream of tartar, you can mix it with baking soda in a 1:1 ratio to approximate baking powder.

Baking soda on its own will not work if you don't have enough acid in the recipe.

Yes, you can but the ratio is not the same. Less baking soda(stronger flavor) than baking powder. You might also want to add a pinch (tiny, tiny pinch) of salt. They all do the same thing. Help the flour rise.

I would say go ahead and give it a try.

Do not substitute. It won't work no matter what.

No, they are not the same.

For 1 teaspoon, use: 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar; or 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 cup buttermilk, sour cream or yogurt (to replace 1/2 cup liquid called for in recipe).

NO!

Can't believe the idiots who say, "Give it a try."

What should you do? Send your brother to the grocery store.

No. Go back to cooking school. Two totally different functions here.

NO, YOU CAN NOT SUBSITUTE BAKING SODA WITH BAKING POWDER BECAUSE THE BAKING SODA MIGHT MAKE THE FOOD EXPLODE, SAME THING WITH THE BAKING POWDER.
