I'm a vegetarian who wants to start eating fish. How do I work it into my diet?

I have been a vegetarian basically my whole life. I am worried my body won't be able to process the meat. How long will I eat it before it stops making me sick? Also, is there a way to approach this -- What fish? How much? How often?

Advice appreciated!

Just start eating fish, and never call yourself a vegetarian.

just go out to eat and try a piece.

I have been a very strict vegan for 6 years and would not have even considered fish. About 3 weeks ago I had a very small amount of tuna, And have slowly built it up to a small can.

My advice is try a small amount but whatever you do don't force anymore than you can handle and if you can slowly have a little more, best thing is to add it with something else.

If you think it is going to make you sick , why eat it?

Start out small. Why are you wanting to eat fish if you've been a vegetarian almost your whole life?

You are on the slippery slope to vegan hades. But if you want fish just start off with small portions.

I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian and eat canned tuna, salmon and some artifical crabmeat. I am also a former classically trained chef and eat some fresh on occasion.

Do not worry, start with a bit of tinned tuna, and then expand your fish choices, as far as people telling you you cannot call yourself a vegetarian, there are no written laws to the Vegetarian lifestyle and the Veggie police will not come and drag you off the the veggie "HOLE", people who are so self-absorbed to say there are strict rules to being a vegantarian or vegan, have been smoking to much wild lettuce.

Your body will not get sick if you start eating meat again. That's an old wives's tale. Your body has not stopped producing all the necessary "ingredients" in order for you to digest and absorb nutrients from meat. But your mind may tell you that it may be wrong and any physiological reaction will be psychosomatic rather than real.

I agree with the 2nd poster in that if you are having second thoughts, then just don't do it. You were(are) perfectly fine when you did not eat it so why bother?

But if you insist:

Buy the fish that you are most familiar with so there are no "surprises". Or try fish that aren't too "fishy" in taste and odor. Fresh water fishes don't have too much fishy odor so you might wanna try those.( I would personally suggest, good quality prepared fish sticks/fingers ala fish and chips) But a good quality salmon or tuna will have no fishy odor at all either. However, this would be quite expensive. A single or even half serving should do it. How often is entirely up to you. Just because you know eat fish (or will), it doesn't mean that's all you eat or that you have to have it everyday.
