As a vegetarian, how do I deal with negative comments about my diet? |
I will just be minding my own business when family or friends start making fun of me or tell me to start eating meat again. I usually just don't say anything. Should I continue being quiet and reserved about this or should I ask them to leave me alone? They laugh at me which I don't think is nice to do. I've been vegan for about 16 years. Its rare that more than 2 days go by without someone making a joke or comment about what I eat. I've heard it all. Its the same old tired jokes every time. At this point I almost high five anyone who can come up with something original. When my family does that I just tell them that they are I'm a vegetarian too, but I don't get made fun of for it. If this is something you plan to commit to, then stick with it and ignore whatever they have to say. Or, try discussing it - you'll probably end up winning any argument about vegetarian vs eating meat! Do your research, you'd be surprised at the facts and how much healthier a lifestyle it is. Good luck! Your friends and family should support you. I support the silence is best, but when it sounds like a continuing problem then I think you should speak up. I mean really, how immature can you get? Respect someones choices, because when you don't how can you make any of your own? I think the best way is to just be honest with them.Explain things from your point of view, and tell them how you really feel and why you think eating meat is wrong.Good luck! First of all we applaud you here for being a vegetarian, I'm now a vegan!!! It isn't nice. well I was vegetarian at once and how I dealed with people is by saying everyone is diffrent and know one is perfect and said I like the way I am and I don't want to be someone I am not. Meat may be good to someone else but to me I don't really enjoy it. Ignore them, if you say something they will just keep taunting you. First time answering, so hear goes: I have been a vegetarian since i was three...your family just doesn't understand your values. Tell them why you are one. Stick up for yourself. Make some friends that ARE vegetarians. Get a vegetarian cookbook and make a really nice vegetarian meal for your family. Ingore them or respond sarcastically. For example, if they tell you: Vegetables are alive too! Then you answer: I draw the line at eating anything with a face. Or if they tell you: You're a freak! you can answer: Of course! Actually I joined recently a religious cult in which is forbidden to eat meat. I do it all the time, and believe me, they'll get tired. While I'm not a vegetarian, I take a lot of crap from my family for my diet since I'm one of very few men who is strict about what I eat. Asking them to leave you alone probably won't work, and being quiet and reserved will prevent a confrontation but prolong your misery. Your best bet, be a jackass right back. Ask them how their barbequed pig's anus tastes, inquire about their blood pressure, how are the hemmoroids? So on and so forth. if they are just picking with you in a funny way then you shouldn't worry. my friends do that. Well, what most vegans would do is refute whatever negative statement people say to them... and I suggest you don't do that. Simply state that it is a matter of opinion and it was your personal choice to become a vegan. Don't preach to whatever stuck up person points it out as a negative thing, show them the criticism doesn't faze you and you are fine with who you are. I'm a vegetarian too. I have been for 3 years now...I know for a fact that yelling at them doesn't work..they are trying to get a rise out of you.... You need to set them straight that this is your personal belief & they need to accept that. If you don't make fun of them for eating innocent animals...then they should be quiet about you not eating them. My family still gets on my case...I have learned to ignore them for the most part. I have avoided some of the situations altogether by not participating in family dinners anymore. If they want to spend time with you then they'll reaslize they need to keep thier opinions to themselves. In this day and age, with so many people becoming health conscious, I can't imagine anybody being so ignorant and saying anything about being a vegetarian. Actually, eating meat is gross when you think about gnawing meat off of bones, so maybe if you can think of gross things to say about eating meat, if you want to stoop down to their level. What you eat or not is your business, so politely ask them to mind their own business. My daughter and grandson don't like to eat meat, and we pretty much let them do their own thing, but we don't cook anything special for them. What I would do is come up with a witty comeback to whatever they say and put them in their place. They are being rude and inconsiderate. But don't stay reserved about it, let them know what you think- but be stern about it and let them know you are not kidding. Tell them to F*** off, I went on a vegitarian diet to loose wight, my buddies gave me ****. Told them I dont give a sh** what they think my a** is getting fat, and I'm not giving up beer. That shut them up. Laugh with them. Make jokes about it. You should simply and politely tell them it's none of their business. It's YOUR personal choice, not theirs. I'm not sure why they have an objection to this, unless it's a PITA to have vegetarian food for you at family gatherings. i know what you mean. my sis always makes snide comments about me being vegan. i usually tell her that i dont tell her how to eat, so she should keep her comments to herself. Give them this Buy them two books which made me realize how unhealthy meat is esp. if it's factory farmed. Get them Slaughterhouse and Mad Cowboy. That might wake them up in short time, it did me. Ignore them and if they keep on bothering you tell them that their veins are the one that are going to get clogged and that they are the ones that eat innocent animals everyday... You go Girl!!!! Saving one animal at a time....I am pro- animals Try coming up with a witty comeback. My girlfriend's brothers make fun of me all the time, so I just say something like, "Unlike you, I don't like having a big piece of meat in my mouth." |
