What is the whitish film up by the stem on organic apples?

I have noticed this a lot on organic apples and it keeps me from wanting to buy them because it looks like something that has been put on them and then cleaned off. Anyone know what it is?

It's just, you know, the Outdoors on them. Leave anything outside for a while, and it'll get rained on, dusted by wind, pollen, earth, bleached by the sun, etc. Organic apples are washed, but very rarely, if ever, waxed to an artificial gloss the way nonorganic ones are.
It's perfectly safe, and if you've ever had an apple tree in your yard (like we did when I was growing up in PA), you'll know that all apples are like that naturally. They all have the white dusty film stuff near the stems.

If the apple is shiny it may be from the wax that they spray on fruits but it may be due to lime deposits in the water they use to water with.
