How much will I spend monthy for organic foods?

I live in Chicago, IL. My finace and I are not vegitarians, but not huge meat eaters either. We have a daughter who will be six months. Assuming we all eat organic, how much can we expect to spend per month on groceries, assuming that we keep spending to a minimum and avioid impulse buying?

I usually go once to the farmer's market weekly and spend (for myself) around $40. I also go to local stores that carry organic products (i.e. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's) and spend maybe $90 per month. So, for me alone (with food to spare) my food costs are around $250 per month.

I waste very little food as I have been blending all fruits and blanching all veggies that I purchase soon after buying them. I also eat lots of brown rice (very nutritious and cheap).

I would say that I spend more on supplements (i.e. tinctures, powders, and vitamins) than on fruits and veggies.

Best wishes!

About $2000 a month depending how much each of you eat per day?

Hmm. Well I don't know for sure, but one thing to consider when trying to buy organic is that there are certain types of produce that need way less pesticides than others; specifically bananas, oranges, and other foods that have protective outer shells! Berries and apples tend to have the most pesticides used on them.

My guess would be around 400-500/month

Try to find your organics at a grocery store, they tend to be cheaper there. Or better yet, an organic farm. You can usually join a CSA (community supported agriculture) for $500 or so for the harvesting season.

Not sure... I try not to think about it anymore... all organics can be destructive to one's wallet thickness.

It depends a lot on how expensive your markets are. Regular supermarkets tend to charge a huge premium on organic foods. Whole Foods is also pricey.

If you have Trader Joe's near you, check out their offerings. It's not all organic, but you can get some good deals on organic items.

Also check for local food co-ops.
