How long is the shelve life for home canned alaskan salmon? |
A neighbor of mine brought back a jar of salmon from her home in Alaska. I have had it for maybe 5 years? Is it still good? And if so, how do I know if it is cooked or not? And do I cook it? Vegetarians and vegans do not eat meat. And the last time I checked fish are animals and not plant life. Put it in the bin, the shelf life has long ago died Canned Salmon is already cooked. (I use it as a change from Tuna Fish...-It just tastes alittle different). I've never eaten canned Salmon that was much over a year old...-& any that WAS, -I gave to my cat (who NEVER complained how old it was!). I don't think I'd "trust" a can of 5 year old Salmon- not even to your cat !!! (Cats won't eat anything that smell "bad" however...-so I GUESS you could try...). Five year old fish????? You're about to eat something that has been dead for FIVE years???? Think of what would have happened by now had the fish been left dead in its natural state...there would not even be a trace of evidence by now. It would be fertilizing the bottom of a river. That is beyond nasty...that isn't even fit for a starving alley cat. Why do you even have to ask this question? Why you asking this in Vegetarian & Vegan ????? It is cooked dont worry about that! 5 years...a bit long but I have eatten things that old before and I am just fine....for now! haha! I think YOU will be ok, and who knows: it may be really good!! The vegetarian and vegan section has a couple differences between the hunting/fishing/moron section. I would not eat it...All can product should be consumed within a year Is the salmon canned or in a jar? Was it made by your nieghbor or something from a shop in Alaska? Either way the salmon should already be cooked if it has been preserved. If it has been preserved properly it will last almost for ever. If it is canned and the can is dented or buldging, throw it away. ( it will contain a micro organizum, call clostridium bocholium which you can not get rid of and could make you very sick and could even kill you. If th salmon is in a jar and your nieghbor made it, it should still be ok but if you open the jar and there are bubbles forming on top, throw it away, if it has a funny smell, throw it away. The best thing is when in dought toss it out. oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....... asked about meat in the vagan section. you gonna get it now! *grabs front row seat & a bag of popcorn so she can watch people fling veggies at the meat eater* Just open it and it it raw darling. |
