How to keep avocado from going brown? |
When I prepare some baby food for my daughter, I only use half the avocado and wrap the rest and refrigerate it. The next day though, it turns completely brown (and very unappetizing). Anyone know some tricks for it to stay green for at least a day? It needs some type of acid. Try lemon/lime juice squeezed over it and then wrap it in plastic wrap and put it in an air tight container. Avocados brown very easily. Freshly-squeezed lemon juice works well, as does storing it in the refridgerator with the avocado pit. rinse it with diluted lemon or lime juice and cover with aluminum foil lemon juice(freshly squeezed) Keep the pit in it, and it won't turn brown. Leave the pit/stone in the avocado and it'll stay green for longer, although I'm not sure if it'll last for over a day. keep it sealed with cling wrap or something similar to stop the air from getting to it and thus making it go brown............. take the pit out-put lemon juice or reconstituted lemon juice on the top enought to wet all exposed parts-u dont have to fill the pit space just move it around over the sink-then cover with saran wrap type cover-not wax-and best to set it in a bowl or a zip lock bag face up. rub it with lemon juice and it will stay green I'm no scientist, but lemon......will work.... you need to put lemon juice on the avocado. it will not turn it brown for max of 2 days. however, you get a lemon taste to it. hope it helps lemon juice prevents it from going brown :) serve from the side that doesn't have the pit. seal the side with the pit in an airtight container -not plastic wrap. otherwise, eat one side while you feed her the other. I am a food scientist. First of all, try not to refrigerate any tropical food, temperatures below 50F damage it and either it turns brown or black or else gets pitted. Cold also kills the flavor of tomatoes by destroying the protein that leads to the main flavor component. But do what you need to do and overnight will not hurt. To reduce brown and black on the cut surface of apples, potatoes, lettuce, avocadoes etc., put a little lemon juice or any other citric acid. A little vinegar works next best. |
