Why is this Vegetarian person allowed to eat fries but not meat?

This person says he is just not allowed to eat flesh, but fries are OK. If I'm not mistaken, most fries are fried in Animal fat, and pure animal fat is far unhealthier than animal flesh. What form of vegetarianism is this. Aren't you a hypocrite if you say you are a vegetarian but you eat fries?

You do realize fries can be fried in vegetable oil, right? They can even be baked in an over with no oil at all.

Well FYI they used to do that in the 1950 or sometime before that they dont do it anymore.
SO the person is right

depends on how they are made, vegetable oil or fat...

You are mistaken.
In the 1970s, most major fast food companies and restaurants stopped frying their foods in lard, as it led to enormous levels of fats and cholesterol. Most now fry in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, which still aren't really all that good for you.
However, McDonalds adds beef flavoring to their fries to keep the meat taste, which makes them non-vegetarian. They had quite a bit of trouble with that a few years ago, as they marketed them as vegetarian in India, where the cow is revered. When the Indians found out they'd been consuming their sacred animal everytime they ate McDonalds, riots occured and McDonalds was forced to pay a settlement to a large group of Hindus for misrepresentation.

No, I eat fries, all we have to do is be sure the fries are cooked in vegetable fat...McDonald's uses lard and beef tallow, Burger King uses vegetable fat...

eiter this person is not aware of oil coming from animal fat or the oil used is coming from corn, peanuts or olives and etc.

Vegetarians would not eat fries that were fried in animal fat. I make fries and I use canola oil...lots if places use plant based oil.

As far as I know most businesses that sell fried products use vegetable oil, that's how come the used oil from aforementioned businesses can be "recycled" and used as biodiesel.

First of all, there's a difference between vegetarian and vegan. Vegetarians can have animal PRODUCTS - cheese, milk, and depending on how strict the person is, some may not care what kind of fat you're using.
Second, where did you get the idea that most fries are cooked in animal fat? Most are cooked in oil of some sort - vegetable, corn, canola....etc. Especially nowadays when restaurants are trying to reduce the fat in their foods.

Im vegan and i only eat fries Fried in Veg or Canoila.
Most fast food fry them in Nonm-flesh Oil

most fries are now fried with veggie oils....and especially peanut oil, (most are moving away from the peanut oils due to allergies) and some of the fries today are coated with a crispy coating and baked.....

Well I dont eat neither. Beuing a vegitarian, there are no rules. You just do what you think is right. It isnt like we arent allowed to eat meat or french fries, but we choose not to.

You are mistaken. Fry's in fast food places are not fried in Animal fat, but vegetable oil!

if i have fries i cook them in vegetable oil and yes there bad for you thats why i dont eat them offten

As others have said, it depends on the oil/fat it's fried in. I know McDonald's is the worst, they actually add beef flavoring to their fries. I worked at Carl's Jr as a teen and they fried the fries in the same grease as the chicken, so I won't eat theirs, either.

vegetarians would never consciously eat anything fried in animal fat, but since the recent uproar over fast food places using animal fat, most if not all chains have switched to vegetable oils. I personally, think that any grease on food is a turn off, vegetable or otherwise.

A lot of fries are cooked in vegetable oil.

Fries in a restaurant are fried in veg fat but also they fry their nuggets in them....yuck. Orida french fries are vegan.

I will take the fries provided it is fried in vegetable oil. the fries had to be from vegetable orgins

That use to be the case. Major chains changed in the late 80's and mid 90's to Soy Bean Oil or Veritable oil due to new health regulations.
The only place I know that still uses pork fat for frying everything is Captain D's (the sea food fast food joint).
That is why your friend still eats fries, they probably made sure the place doesn't USE pig fat (DUH). Plus, you don't really need any fat or oil to cook "baked fries", thus baking is healthier.

To answer above:
mcd's does not use lard, they use soy bean oil. However, they are still not vegetarian or vegan b/c they put beef seasoning on them (ask for a health label and the manager will provide you with it and you can see for yourself).

wow your off base
no place of licensed resturant business uses lard any more
your post is foolish in light of the new "trans-fat" issue

Acctually, a lot of fries are fried in vegetable or canola oil..........

Fries are a potato...and no, most are fried in oils.

Firstly, I would disagree that most fries are cooked/fried using oil produced from animal fat by-product as this may vary from country to country.
Unless one can be certain that the fries are truely cooked using animal fat by-product [including but limited to lard], I doubt there is any "straight and fast" rule to acuse any vegetarian being a hypocrite.

ps: No, I'm no where near being a vegetarian.... yet.

people can fry their own fries at home, you know. of course, in non-animal fat. and most of fries are fried in vegetable oil anyway. except for mcd's, because they fry them in animal lard.

Your assuming that the only oil comes from animals... Or perhaps you can't see farther than the Mc Donald's menu and can't possibly see how could you cook these French Cut Potatoes without animal fat... Its called Coconut oil, Safflower oil, Sunflower oil, Olive oil,.. I cook my own food. I had FRIES just 2 days ago,, I used Coconut oil.

Resteraunts use vegetable oil and have done for several years now. Some use olestra which is fat free.

Fries are cooked in vegetable oil, in the USA.

Vegan Vegetarians normally are the ones that don't eat animals or the bi-product. Just plain vegetarians aren't so strict.
