Whats a good alternative to eating meat for weight lifters?

Cause people say dont eat meat cause of enviormental and crulety reasons. But what should weight lifters do? we need the protein and calories from meat to give us strenght to lift weights. i wish people would say what alternatives to eat. i dont think eating 36+ eggs is healthy or drinking 5 gallons of milking is wise, so what can we eat to get the same number of calories and protein we need to lift weights?

dude, I lift weights all the time... and am quite strong... haven't missed a beat since I became a vegetarian...
I am becoming slightly more lean but much stronger... on push downs I actually have to add weight to the machine to work out (it doesn't have enough weight on it anymore) how much protein do you think you can use on a daily basis? you would be fine. Take it from me, I'm neither lacking in size or strength... only difference is that now... my stamina is out of control.

There have been so many vegetarian and vegan worl champion weight lifters and body builders, just do a search and I am positive you will find some information.

There are many more out there than you may believe.

Stop the weights, immediately! Have a salami sandwhich.

Ive never found it to be a big problem.

I have had to be a bit more conscious of what and when I'm eating as I don't have meat constantly decaying/digesting in my system 24/7.

protein is not stored by the body and must be obtained from a food source. protein is at its maximum uptake 30 mins to an hour after doing the specific exercise. also the uptake of protein is optimized by eating carbohydrates at the same time.

i tailor specific recovery meals for after weight bearing sessions. generally i have beans and legumes with lots of vegies, mainly leafy greens and brocolli then ill eat some good wholegrain bread with each different thing as i eat.

you can get some good vegie patty type hamburger things, ive find the ones with a high chic pea content to be quite good.

Also you can get hemp protein powder, which ive been considering getting, to up the level a bit. it contains all the essential amino acids so its just as good as any other protein powder but i think its better cos there is not bad **** from animals like saturated fat or estrogens. its actually got omega 3 and 6 instead of saturated fat.

a combination of beans and rice is also a good complete protien meal.

also if you get stuck and dont have anything its always pretty easy to just go the peanut butter sandwiches. its not elegant but it gets the job done, just make sure to get a natural brand, one thats not hydrogenated.

there is protein in most things, most carb sources and vegetables have at least a small amount of protien, if you keep your calorie intake up it isnt really a problem.

i think you only need to go any further if your specifically looking for more progress and lots of growth.

heres a post about the meals:

(though it doesnt seem to be working at the moment :/)

and heres a cool vegan body building site where theres some good hemp protein powder testimonials.

Vitamin supplements dude. And lots of them cause if you are a serious weight lifter you will need tons of protein, and well eating meat is the cheapest and easiest way. But not the only way.

Did you know that not all meat is bad for you or inhumane. Fish is a great source of protein(especially tuna) as well as legume's(beans, lentils, peanuts). And their are organic farmers who raise livestock organicly and kill them humanely. I have found these kinds of meats at like Health food stores Like Wild Oats Market or something similar to that.

But yeah if you are a vegetarian make sure to take lots of supplements. Not only do you need the protein but you need iron as well I had a vegetarian friend who did no research how to live that kind of lifestyle and ended up in the hospital with kidney failure because of an Iron deficiency.

Here is a list of things you can eat with protien in them but keep in mind that your body needs to be using those protiens or they will be stored as fat. So many guys eat a lot of protien to gain muscle mass but never see the results because they are consuming protien faster than their body can use it. The best thing to do is get a variety of different protiens and eat them in small portions throughout the day. Here are two web sites as well that list some vegetarian atheletes.

Spirulina.. It has 15 times the absorbable of meat..

Foods High in Protein

Yogurt, 1 cup 鈥?usually 8-12 grams, check label
Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) 鈥?6 grams per oz

Hard cheeses (Parmesan) 鈥?10 grams per oz

Beans (including soy)
Tofu, 陆 cup 20 grams protein
Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
Soy beans, 陆 cup cooked 鈥?14 grams protein
Split peas, 陆 cup cooked 鈥?8 grams

Nuts and Seeds
Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein
Almonds, 录 cup 鈥?8 grams
Peanuts, 录 cup 鈥?9 grams
Cashews, 录 cup 鈥?5 grams
Pecans, 录 cup 鈥?2.5 grams
Sunflower seeds, 录 cup 鈥?6 grams
Pumpkin seeds, 录 cup 鈥?19 grams
Flax seeds 鈥?录 cup 鈥?8 grams

eating fish can be just as bad as eating other meats.

You don't even necessarily need the eggs or milk either.

What you gain from meat protein, you lose in stamina. A good weight lifter should have a medium of the two. There's many bars, and nuts, beans, green vegetables, etc. that give protein, and it'll give you enough. For weight-lifting though, I would go with supplements as well (although I personally wouldn't recommend them, I'm also not a weight-lifter).

Soy, Tofu, Beans, and PB.

I think vegetarian is a nice way to go, but in order to build muscle you need animal protein and there's nothing wrong with that
there are whey drinks that are helpful, but you do need meat
