Is it vegan to introduce predators into an environment to control animals? |
Because this is proxy killing, would this be considered non-vegan? Hey Maggie, You know, it depends. I think if there is an environment where things are absolutely out of control and animals would suffer if an influx of prey was plentiful. After all, having the ecosystem out of balance is never right, and usually the reason these imbalances happen is because of people anyway... we push animals into isolated areas because we're constantly expanding our "world" into theirs... we make "wildlife preserves" because we want to isolate wildlife and animals from us as best as we can... we've turned the planet into a pie chart, with everyone owning their little percentage, and that's not right. But I digress. Not alien species, but it is acceptable to incorporate plants that attract beneficial insects. Sometimes nature may need a little push in the right direction- particularly with the destruction man has caused. If it were necessary to correct an imbalance, then it may be justified. Then again, can we really be trusted to decide what is balanced and what isn't when we're so out of balance ourselves? Good question, I guess if I was a ultra strict vegan I would say yes its wrong because your using another animal to kill another on your behalf. Vegan is a human choice and lifestyle and has nothing to do with wildlife. Introducing a natural preditor into it's natural environment is acceptable however wild animals that have been domesticated require close observation to ensure they do not become dependent on domesticated life and try to wander back to civilization. For example Panthers have been introduced back into wildlife reservations in Florida to control deer population. These Panthers have been tagged and are monitored to ensure they do not cross over into civilization. The same has been done with Jaguars in Texas and Mexico. The difference is that humans are not properly designed to eat meat or animal by-products and carnivores are. no..it is allowing nature to be nature...as in the wolf population within the Yellowstone park.... |
