How do I sack an employee in a nicer way?

I run a day care centre and I have this worker who doesnt show interest in her work. She applies for leave frequently and goes on mc frequently too. When she is at work she shows her moods to me and the others.
I'm new at becomming a boss and I've never sack anyone as yet. So pls help. Thanks.

Please stop for a minute. Be absolutely sure you are doing the right thing. I have been a manager for over 20 years and I have had to this many times. It is very hard every time, and you must be sure you are being fair. First of all, talk to the person about the problems you have with their work behavior. If it continues be sure they understand the duties they are being asked to perform. Many times employees do not clearly understand the expectations of the job or functions. Give this person a clear description of the expectations in writing. If the behavior continues then give the person a written warning and a short period of time to correct the problems. Do this with scheduled times to re-evaluate the behavior and coaching. This process should be over a 2 week period. If the behavior is not corrected then you have done everything you can and the problem is with the employee and not your managing. Be sure to document every interaction with this employee regarding this problem. If you then have to terminate this employee you can do it with a clear conscious.

Remember it is more cost effective to fix a problem employee rather to replace one. the start up time and searching for new employees can be very expensive.

I'M ALSO NEW AT THIS BEING BOSS THING. BUT UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE ALREADY HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF LETTING SOMEONE GO. JUST SIT HER DOWN A SAY THAT YOU NEED TO LET HER GO YOU DON'T LIKE HER ATTITUDE TOWARD HER JOB.

Your picture (avatar) might give us the wrong impression of you. Well tell her we have to let you go. Or something similer.

As an employer you should have performance appraisal with a merit system. I would suggest you start evaluated this employee on her job performance and make it a matter of record in her file giving her the opportunity to improve her job performance. Poor job performance is a legitimate ground for dismissals.

If you do not have performance appraisals for all your employees, I would recommend you implement them even if you are a small business.

Get the kids all dressed up like the prople on survivor, and have them vote her off. Then you can say... "Sorry, the tribe has spoken". ha, ha, ha ...

seriously, just tell her she doesn't have the right attitude that you are looking for and let her go. Being the boss is not always easy.

You should be able to honestly tell her what you've explained here and possibly give her some time if you wish, to see if her attitdude and perfomance improve according to your expectations.

Most states are still "employment at will," meaning that your consittutional right to associate with someone or discontinue associating with them is protected, and you can tell her to take a hike for any reason.

However, there are some states that might have Socialist laws that violate your rights and you may have to be more careful, use more discretion, ect.

I definitely think that you need to have an honest, straightforward talk with her and be prepared to take the necessary action. Ask yourself, what would Donald Trump do? Welcome to the world of entrepreneurship and business. All of this "goes with the territory" and these are your responsibilities, or part of your "job" of being a boss.

just tell her you dont think this is the job for her, and tell her you think shed be better off somewhere else, where she can be happy, make it out like your doing her a favour! lol

I have fired people before and it's never fun. First if you can, document some of the instances you explained here. Have something on paper to back up your reasons for firing her. Then explain to her that working in child care is not like working in a clothing store or an office. You are dealing with children's lives and you take that very seriously. Tell her you have to be able to depend on each and every worker. Also tell her that you need a teaching team that works well together to meet the needs of the kids and that she has not been a team player. Hope that gives you some ideas. I have a day care in my home currently and am seriously considering opening my own larger day care center and I really dread having to deal with this kind of stuff. Good luck.

IT may sound mean but truth is it happens and she will probibly have it happen to her again. SAy im sorry but im going to have to let you go.

idk if i would say why but maybe you should so she doesnt do it again. and she learns from her mistake

Have you talked to her about her behavior? If not I suggest doing that and get a feel for what is going on with her from there. Once the conversation is started if it heads and keeps heading southward then tell her for the Companies best interest we have to let you go. If the conversation moves upwards and you are getting positive feedback maybe it would be ok with a trial basis before letting her go. Maybe she needs a reality check from her boss. You have to let her know that her attitude can not and will not be tolerated.

lie to her so you dont sound like the bad guy. tell her somthing like "a parent comlained so by law you have to"

tell her that you have to let her go because she isnt dependable and you know there are others out there that would love that job and would work more than her.
make her feel bad for not doing her job, but dont rub her face in the dirt either. just tell her that you are giving her a 2 weeks notice because you cannot trust her. you need her there and shes never there.
