What is the best way to attract hummingbirds to your feeder? |
I saw a hummingbird in our back yard two separate times last week, so I set up our new hummingbird feeder near the area where I saw them. Yet they haven't touched the feeder. How long should I wait before moving it? Use 4 parts water to one part sugar as the nectar, nothing else is needed. They should find it quickly. Adding flowers to your yard that attract hummers are the best addition that you can do. See a great site on hummers at: have a hummingbird noice maker and about 2 weeks whistle my wife put fake red flowers on the shepard's hook that held our feeder and now ( at last count ) we have 12 hummingbirds. To get hummingbirds to come up to our house, we planted flowers that attract them plus the feeders. Make sure the feeder is red or has red on it as this is the color that attracts them - never use red dye in the sugar water as red dye was found to be slowly killing them, I wouldnt move the feeder - sometimes it takes a while - the feeder we set out last year has twice as many birds this year.. and I am sure more will be coming next year A great way to attract them is tieing red ribbon on it so that they'll see it and think its a flower. Good luck! You need to provide them with nectar. Frankly, water with sugar in it is all that they crave. In addition, make sure that your feeder is red. They like that because it resembles a flower (but avoid yellow because that color seems to attract insects). Place something colorful and busy near the feeder. Flowers, of course, are the best, but fake flowers will do the trick, too. Hummers even check out your pretty laundry! we live in a protected biosphere with over 150 different types of birds, There are some plants that have a bright red flower that attract hummingbirds. I don't know the name of it, but my Mom has them in her yard. I have seen feeders that have nectar in it that has this bright red color. I wouldn't move the feeder. The more you touch it, the more of your scent gets left on the feeder. They may be using it and you are missing them, they don't always stay around for a while. |
