My uncle is coming for Christmas and he is diabetic. What sort of food can I make? |
He is type 2 diabetes and he is strict about his diet. I do not just want to have sugar free candy. What are some snacks or items I should keep in my house so he wont go hungry? nuts, fruits, and vegetables are sure things, (make sure the nuts don鈥檛 have added sugar, i.e. honey roasted). If I was you I would offer to take him to the store with you once he gets there b/c finding low carb food is really tricky. low carb is a whole new world! Things that are whole wheat often have sugar in them. Things that have no sugar added normally still have too many carbs. You have to check the labels for the total number of carbs. You subtract the fiber and the carbs have to be under ten. Ask Him.. Keep fresh fruit, vegetables, plain yogurt, fruit juice/s. Make it easy on yourself and ask him. If he is as strict as you say he will definitely tell you. It's not as difficult as you think and he probably won't have large portions. Every diabetic is a little bit different, depending on the type of medication they are on and the type of diabetes that they have. The best idea is to ask your uncle (or his wife if he has one) what he can eat and what he specifically must avoid. Type 2 diabetes is often linked with obesity, you pretty much just damage your pancreas so that it won't produce enough insulin. for a snack how about mixed nuts and dried fruit also deviled eggs are good celery with cream cheese, cheese and crackers, Fresh fruit. sugar free jello or pudding. Juice bars. cereal and milk makes a good snack also. Jerky, sandwich and or salad fixings. I hope these helped. pasta with cheese you can go here... theres alot of recipes for diabetics Lean meat, (turkey, chicken, salmon); fruit that is high in fiber and on the low end of the glycemic scale; apples, anything that ends in berry (raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, etc.) and grapefruit, these types of fruit are the best options for diabetics. BEANS, I cannot stress beans enough. All-non starchy vegetables; anything that is leafy and green, low carb content and good source of fiber (broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, lettuce, brussel sprouts); carrots and tomatoes only if they are raw; celery, sweet potatoes; small portions of peanut butter; almonds and peanut butter; brothy soups that are packed with vegetables and lean meat. I hope this helps, I have been a Type 1 Diabetic for 8 mths. Fiber One Bars are a delicious sweet snack and the South Beach Diet Bars. Basically you want to serve thing with less than 12 grams of sugar , the less the better :O) Candy bars. |
