Were does most of the produce in United States supermarkets come from?

I'm curious as to were most of our produce comes from. Is most of it from US farmers or is it imported? What are the statistics on this? What Federal regulations control this? Who is the largest produce importer? Any links to sources or other info would be appreciated.

Really, it depends on the produce and time of the year. Sometimes, strawberries come from US producers, then they come from Southern (America) producers, later in the season.

Check with Millbrook and other large grocery suppliers.

Seems to me that most of our grocers use "local" produce, in season, then have it shipped from outside. The pricing reflects this, as well as, weather affects.

I am a former chef and buyer plus I worked after my disability was rejected as a produce clerk, it is a rotating sort of solution, Texas, California, Floirda, the southern US, Mexico and the imports come from as far as China, Chile, Argentina and South Africa.

Because growing seasons are so different, at many times produce is available from many areas, in the winter it is generally the warmer climates, but as time has gone on, the other areas now grow alot more of a variety, fruits, veg and other produce.

So take oranges, most of the year the from the US, but in the winter months may come from South Africa, and at Xmas the clemetines are harvest in Morocco, Algeria and Spain. So it is not so much a single producer any more, at this time of year you may find more local produce from farmers in your area and while shorter in season, sometime they are better tasting and a better value.
