Which is the better way to keep carbonation in a two liter bottle of soda?

My friend and I are having a discussion about the best way to keep carbonation in a two liter bottle of soda.

Method #1: Squeeze all the air out of the bottle prior to putting on the cap to create a vacuum.

Method #2: Keep the bottle fully expanded prior to putting on the cap to create pressure so the carbonation can鈥檛 escape.

Method #2 undoubtedly because method #1 require loss of CO2 from the liquid to reinflate the bottle. The air/CO2 mix of gas in method #2 helps maintain the pressure. Do an experiment if you wish to confirm what I say with two identical bottles at same temperature treated as per method #1 & #2

Ah well, let him drink flat soda. Report Abuse

Method #2 works and if you turn it upside down it will stay carbonated longer.

Hi Ken
Well, as silly as this may sound, (and I am a certified Coke and Pepsi addict),
I always place my 2liter soda pop bottles laying flat in the fridge...............for some strange reason, it seems to keep them carbonated a lot longer.

I have NO logical/scientific explanation for it BUT IT WORKS FOR ME !!!!!!

Thanks, Good Luck, now I am curious to know who will come up with some clever answer........lol

My SMARTASS answer would be to keep shaking the bottle, so that this way NO ONE will want to open the bottle.

Have you tried that trick where you put mentos candy mints in a 2L bottle of Diet Coke........it's pretty cool !

don't know if it works, but I read somewhere if the bottle is turned upside down, the carbonation is suppose to stay better, like I said, I don't know if it works or not, never tried it myself...(you'd think it would leak wouldn't you?)

hey,

well i know if u squeeze the air out then put the cap on and shake the bottle it well expaned and fill up with carbonation. however i have heard that storing it upside down is suposse to help or so i've heard.

#2 for sure, less space to fill up with the used carbonation

Method #2...

I always squeeze all the air out of it before putting the cap back on.

why not just use one of these?
