Perfect Picnic 101
by Stephanie Gottschalk
Having a perfect picnic is easy as long as you have the right materials, and think outside the box. Having a picnic is a great way to connect with your friends and family, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Ensure that yours will be as perfect as can be with these simple tips.

Scout out possible sites beforehand. You can check whether a park is too buggy or loud, or if that mountain overlook you’ve passed will provide the right atmosphere for romance. This way, you won’t run into any unpleasant surprises once you get to a new place. Do be creative – think about rooftop observation areas, balconies, or even dressing up your own backyard with a canopy and some candles.

Simplicity is key. The best picnics are those in which there is not too much hassle with food preparation and cleanup – choose simple, uncomplicated meals. Finger foods are a great choice, as are ‘deli bars’ – a selection of meats, cheeses, and condiments along with some bread so you can make easy sandwiches on the spot. Of course, you can prepare an impressive spread if that’s what you have in mind – just make sure that it’s not something that will get soggy before you can eat it, and wont’ be too messy. Anything with crisp vegetables, crusty bread, and vinegar-based marinades should still taste wonderful by the time you’re ready to eat. Pack pre-made dishes in containers with tight-fitting lids for maximum taste and freshness.

Make sure you’re prepared. You’ll want to have the following items on hand:

• A fully fitted picnic basket or backpack which includes plates, utensils, cloth napkins, cups, and an insulated cooler compartment. Some picnic baskets and packs even include salt and pepper shakers, tablecloths, wine bottle openers, insulated wine cooler compartments and thermoses.

• A high quality, soft, comfortable picnic blanket will put you at ease, providing a comfortable place to sit and a barrier against insects.

• Frozen blue ‘cold packs’ are preferable to ice, because they won’t melt and leak all over the place after a long day in the sun.

• Don’t forget paper towels or napkins, as well as some moistened hand wipes for sticky foods.

• A plastic bag or plastic wrap is helpful for covering and storing leftovers that weren’t packed in their own container

• Recycle a grocery bag by using it as a trash receptacle.

• Remember to protect yourself from the sun: bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. If you’re extra sensitive, you may want an umbrella.

• A small first-aid kit and insect repellant will ensure that you’re not mobbed by insects, and you’re covered if any minor accidents happen.

• One of the most important things to bring is a camera, to help you remember this perfect picnic forever!
