10 action ways to effortless exercising by mary lennox Most of us want to be able to slip into our summer togs and reveal a little more flesh as summer approaches. For many people, going to a gym regularly is either not possible due to work and family commitments. There are also others who quite simply would not enjoy this pursuit in the pursuit of fitness. On purpose, I have chosen to write this article as we are moving towards the tail end of summer. The suggestions I make are ones which can generally be incorporated into our lives throughout the year. Now is probably a good time to start as it will also add to the structure of the more dreary months ahead, offering opportunity for fun and socialising. 1. TRAMPOLINING lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and increases bone density. There is less pressure on weight bearing joints and is therefore a useful exercise for those who have been largely sedentary. It also helps to increase concentration and enhances confidence and coordination. it is also a social activity and FUN. 2. GARDENING gives all of the benefits of an aerobic workout with the bonus of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers. 3. BELLY DANCING involves a series of routines which focus on particular areas of the body -abdomen, waist, hips and thighs. There are also benefits in terms of emotional and spiritual well being. 4. WALKING is something which we can do each day. Spending around twenty minutes can help in keeping us flexible and again helps with bone density. Try getting off the bus a few stops early. Take a walk rather than the car. Often having a dog can be a great incentive for walking and a sure fire way to meet other people. If you are out walking, be aware of what is around you and normally taken for granted. You might find your spirits increasing as well as your muscle tone. 5. YOGA can be helpful in terms of flexibility, strength and exerting a calming effect. 6. PILATES helps to condition the body. It tones the body and strengthens the abdominal muscles. The back muscles are strengthened .Breathing and coordination is improved. 7. SWIMMING increases our energy levels and stamina. 8. CYCLING is another way to increase energy and endurance levels. In summer months it is also a good way of seeing the countryside. 9. BASKETBALL is a good way to promote fitness particularly for young people and is a social activity and team sport so encourages working together. 10. SALSA DANCING like other forms of dance is a useful exercise. It involves a lot of fun and contact with others. This is therefore a useful pursuit for people who are looking for opportunity to practise social skills, and build up confidence and self esteem.
