Skin conditions and treatments by Phil Edwards Skin conditions can be a source of embarrassment for those who are afflicted by these conditions. Although most of these skin related conditions are often not threatening to the health of the individual, they can have the effect of making the individual feel self conscious. The skin covers the entire body making it one of the features of the body which is first noticed. Because the skin is so highly visible blemishes, disfigurements and other skin related conditions can be a source of embarrassment for those who are afflicted. Eczema is a skin condition which is categorized by dry patches on the skin. These patches are usually localized in less severe cases of eczema. However, more severe cases may cover a substantial amount of the body. Babies are especially susceptible to outbreaks of eczema but adults can suffer from eczema as well and some people are more susceptible than others to this condition. Treatment of eczema usually involves the use of creams, lotions or ointments to return moisture to the skin. Rosacea is a particularly troubling skin condition because most people who suffer from rosacea do not realize there is a name or a treatment for their condition. Most people who have rosacea assume there is nothing that can be done to improve the condition. Rosacea is categorized by persistent redness, flushing, pimples or visible blood vessels. These symptoms may be mild or severe. Psoriasis is a skin disease which manifests itself in the form of skin lesions covered in silvery scales. These lesions often appear more harmful than they are in reality. While psoriasis may appear to be painful it really is not physically painful. Most people with psoriasis are more aware of the physical appearance of the disease than they are with the physical sensation it causes. As with any disease there are varying degrees of severity. Most cases are relatively mild with only a small area of lesions; however, there are cases of those who have lesions covering a large portion of their skin. Skin cancer is one of the more serious skin conditions which can have grave consequences including fatality. However, skin cancer is treated with a high success rate when it is caught in an early stage of the disease. Skin cancer which is caught in an early stage is likely still localized making the removal of the cancerous cells a fairly simple process. Surgery to remove cancer cells is by far the most common treatment for skin cancer. If the skin cancer is not caught early other treatment methods such as radiation and chemotherapy may be required. Skin cancer can be prevented. Avoiding direct sunlight during the hours from 10 am and 4 pm, using adequate sunscreen, seeking shade and wearing sunglasses are just a few of the precautions which can help to protect the skin from skin cancer. Acne is a skin condition which is a source of embarrassment for many teenagers. Acne is categorized by bumps on the skin. These bumps are often red and irritated. There are a number of treatment options for those with acne. Over the counter treatments are typically topical treatments such as creams and lotions. For more severe cases of acne, a dermatologist may prescribe oral antibiotics as well as topical treatments which are stronger than those commercially available.
