How does the Australian legal system handle children of divorce?

I know quiet a bit about the Australian Legal system but i can't find much in the family law act 1975 about how they handle children or any case law/precedent. If anyone can help it would be really appreciated :)

It is usually discussed through a custodial hearing which is generated a couple of weeks after filing for divorce with the courts.
This hearing can be waved however, if the parents have a private agreement between themselves in deciding which parent the child will reside with.

im not really sure but im pretty sure that custody of the kids goes to the person who has been there primary carer during the relationship, mothers usually get custody unless there is drugs and abuse involved. talk to family court lawyer or something.
