What is the average amount of time before a man proposes?

I have been with my BF for almost four years with very little mention of proposal. Any mention has being just kidding around, I don't want to bring it up because then it won't be surprising or special. We don't live together as he works out of town, should I bring it up or just be happy with what I have? Any ideas or experiences would be welcome. Please serious answers only.

I'm 24 years old and he is 29. we see each other a couple of times a month and he works four hours away from where I live.

This really depends a lot on how old both of you are and in what stage of life. Guys generally settle down when they're ready, and if they aren't in that stage of life nothing will change it. There was an episode of "Sex & the City" where it was copmared to whether a taxi cab has its light on. It's a good analogy. Have a conversation with him. If you're been together for 4 years you can have a conversation, can't you?

4 years is a long time to wait. Ask him what he sees for you two in the future (say 1-2 years). If marriage is not their I would move on honey. I was with someone for nearly 6 and still wasn't married.

Probably 2-3 years. I waited almost 2 years before we got engaged. We've mostly been apart though, he lived in North Dakota over a year of that time while I lived in Missouri. We would only see each other maybe a week out of a month. It was tough, now we see each other almost every week on the weekends (he lives in Missouri now but still an hour or two away). We started talking of getting married the first week we got together but finally got engaged last September, in a hot air balloon, no less. =) In my opinion, 4 years is a long time to invest into a relationship with not much forward direction. If you are happy with what you have then just continue on, but if you are not, then you need to talk to him before another 4 years pass you by. Its only fair to the both of you. Men proposes AFTER the girl says she's preganant. It also helps if the man has no gas in his car and no means to escape in general.

There is no time limit. I would have to say seance he lives out of town. he is going to wait to you two can get a house together tell he proposes. The AM. dream get a house and get married. So tell you move to him or he can move to you it's not going to happen.I would not bring it up i would bring up the living closer. One thing leads to another.

after he realizes that he has seen and deal with all your BS, proposing is easy. i had a GF for 6 years, but eventually i had to let go. she could not close her legs to save her life. So u see, it takes time.
