How do you achieve the knock down type finish on an interior wall?

I have a patch of bedroom wall to repair and it has a "knock down" texture. I am very capable of fixing it but I would like to know how to get that type of texture and any tricks would help. Thanks.

Myself, I use a texture gun to apply the mud.You can also do it with a texture roller, or even a very stiff brush. Just use ordinary drywall joint compound, thinned down with water, let set a couple of minutes, and take a drywall knife, a 12' works well for patches, and starting at the top, run it over the "globs" of mud, staying with a vertical line. It isn't hard at all. Know you can do it. Have fun!

use "homax" or "spray tex" brand knockdown texture ( in aerosol can) if the texture job is small. follow the directions and you will get pretty good results. If you heat the cans in hot water ( as suggested) it will atomize the texture (inside the can) and you will get more of an orange-peel texture.

Spatter it with mud. Knock it down with a trowel.
