How do I tell if a motor's start winding has failed? |
Our dryer stopped working the other day: when I press the Start button, it starts running, but as soon as I let go of the button it stops again. I've done a bunch of investigating, and the usual causes for this don't seem to be the problem. One expert told me that the start winding on the motor has probably failed, and the motor needs replacing. Before I spend the $100+ to buy a new motor, though, I'd like to be sure that that's the problem. Is there some way to test a dryer motor's start winding to see if it's failed? I have the dryer almost completely disassembled, so I can access the motor easily. Test the motor for continuity across the leads. Since you have to pull the motor anyway, just go ahead and replace it. check the normally open contact on the motor starter with an ohm meter which would be the holding circuit to keep the motor on when you push the momentary contact start button The problem is in the switch (start button) or the relay on the motor. There is no such thing as a start winding. Put 120 volts right to the motor and see if it runs. If it does run then it might be the holding circuit or a relay. there is a latching relay on the start button that holds when you press start . I doubt very seriously it is the motor. If your motor was bad it would not run at all. I work at a power plant if you need references. I would contact the maker of the dryer and tell them the problem, they will ask for the model and serial number and supply you with the necessary part. Do not waste your money on a new motor. I assure you I know what I am talking about. Please let me know how it turns out. Good luck. Oh and by the way... it doesn't take 8000 hours to be an electrician unless your an idiot. Your wife is correct. It doesn't sound like a start winding on the motor. I would check your start button - if its a mechanical button that depresses and stays in check that it does actually stay in, if its a push button with spring return (which I doubt it is) there will either be a relay or a centrifugal switch. If its electronic I would suggest you get in touch with a service agent |
