What is a landlord required to do when mold is found?

I have mold in my house and my landlord is repairing it. What is he supposed to do for me besides knock money off of the rent and fix it? Where am I supposed to stay?

nothing - you should've wiped it off with bleach when you discovered it. mold is great for this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeJ1c9YOz...

it's the "radon" of the 21st century.

Actually most of you are wrong. I found my answers with out even depending on you all! ;-) So some of you better watch out Report Abuse

Mike 1942 must be a slum lord. if its toxic mold your apartment owner is liable for much more than paying for a hotel while your displaced from your home. Get it tested for toxic mold stachybotrys. if its this type then you should just run as it can kill you slowly and cause braindamage

Repairing it is the only thing required of him, in most states....and you are lucky to be in a state that requires that much! Some don't even require that. You will have to find some other place to stay on your own....friend, relative, hotel, or shelter, like the Salvation Army shelters.

Not a darn thing - they have setup the laws to keep them from having to in most states and cities.

You need to expand a little bit. How much mold are we talking? A house full, or just one room? And, what exactly is the landlord doing to fix the problem? Killing the mold with bleach is only a temporary fix, since whatever is causing the desireable conditions for mold to grow hasn't been addressed. Mold needs a damp living environment, so the source of the dampness (roof leak, leaking pipes, etc.) must be repaired or replaced to cure the problem. You haven't said if the landlord has offered you a temporary rent reduction while the problem is being repaired. If he hasn't - be proactive and contact him and request that a reduction is in order for your inconvenience. If this doesn't work, you do have one recourse. You can't refuse to pay rent, however, you can inform the landlord that until the problems are repaired, you will be putting all rental money into an escrow account, payable to him when the problem is repaired to your satisfaction. Simply open a savings account, and deposit your monthly rent into the account. When the problem is repaired, give him however many months rent he is due, you keep the interest. This is a drastic measure, but perfectly legal. Normally, most legitimate landlords will act very quickly if they find out that they won't be getting the rent check until the situation is resolved.

First thing is to get the hell out of that house/apartment whatever you are in....black mold is dirty, dangerous and cancerous.....most landlords will not make a fix....way too expensive for them....98% of landlords will hide this since they would have to tear down drywall/or plaster to get it all out....very expensive...next place you move to ask the landlord if the place has been inspected for mold and check with your local building department. move and move quick!!!!!!!!!

money of the rent get real >>fixing it , and he doesn't even have to do that . your a renter you have very little rights

There is no way to fix or repair black mold damage.
The solution is to install a UV light, remove the source of moisture, and control room relative humidity at 50%.

Black mold will kill.

The low cost, comfortable, and convenient method to eliminate molds is to install a corn stove or cornplace heater. www.groups.yahoo.com/group/cornplace

Mold is only dangerous when you're hearing about it from a 'mold remediation specialist'.

Mold is everywhere & always has been. If you get a buildup of mold, spray some bleach on it. Or you can get a 'mold remediation specialist'. Look under 'Snake Oil' in the yellow pages.

This is a difficult question, if it is dangerous mold, then you need to move and ask him to pay for you a room or let you stay in another rental property.
