I am an African American woman interested in going natural. Any ideas on the healthy transition?

I haven't had a relaxer for 8 months but I am now interested in wearing my hair loose for a while before moving to locks.

eat healthy and if u wanna eat ice cream... go with ben & jerry's organic

Uuuh . . . . no.

invest in doogro that made my hair long! and wash and deepconditon once a week and buy this stuff called smooth n shine hair polisher . good luck

Great idea! You go girl!

Bravo to you. I am also black, and I have long hair. Now, being a guy, I have never put a relaxer in my hair. So, my three years of growth are likley longer than your entire lifetime of growth. I'm not exactly sure what you should do. Men can get away with thier hair looking like crap. Women can't. I'd say ask your hairdresser.

the first thing u must do is invest n a deep conditioner because it doesn't matter how often u decide 2 shampoo u must keep your hair conditioned and leave it on for a while and get some leave n conditioner. now as far as the perm u still have perm n your hair i dont care if u havent had 1 n a year the ends of your hair absorb the perm as it grows out and your hair begins 2 grow so some people like 2 have their perm cut out to help with the transition,

Yes, I do have some good advice on going natural. I went natural about five years ago. I had a "curl" and I let it grow out. I wear an afro and it's the bomb! My hair grows faster and it's much, more healthier. I have two daughters and they both had perms and they've let their hair grow natural. My youngest daughter (26) let her hair go natural last year and then she locked it. She had not put relaxer in her hair for 3 or 4 months. Her hair is beautiful now. It has grown a lot and she lets it hang down or she rolls it for a classier look. My oldest daughter just let hers lock about a month or so ago and it's coming along just fine. I'm in Arkansas and they're in Ohio where there are more beauticians to work with their hair than us down south. I like the locks but I'm afraid to lock it because I'm not comfortable with the beauticians here. So I stick to my afro. I just plait it at night and pick it out in the morning.

You go Girl. Get to a professional styling salon soon and let them treat your hair and keep it soft. Do not be afraid to wash it twice a week and condition it.Try this website: ultrablackhair.com; I use this products for the past 3 years with success (natural now) and I have shoulder length hair that I blow dry and flat iron, and I never get my ends trimmed. Buy the book too, read it for yourself. Good Luck.

just shampoo it...natural means you let it be just that...you sound as though that is what you are already doing...

Then just do it. If you need help in making it look good then go to a beauty salon. Us black people don't need help in the natural hair department. We were born that way.

don't shave

U go gal!!!!!

Shampoo ur hair to keep the scalp clean and make sure u apply hair food and some moisturising lotions such as Pink-Oil to give ur hair a healthy look and feel, the moisturiser will prevent the dryness of the scalp that might cause dandruff (flaking of the scalp). Try visiting a hair salon at least once a month to get ur hair steamed, this will help stop any breakages and will also give ur hair a good look.
I hope it helps.

It is wonderful to hear that you are embarking on this, most women just continue to relax their hair..simply because it appears to be easier and it's so common. Their are several options although most woman don't think so, you can get braids (with or without extension), double strand twist, kinky twist (with or without extensions), flat twist, straw set using rods or by double stranding your own hair and then taking it out a day later....etc. And of course you can wear out or loc it, I advise you cut out the chemical and your hair will more healthier. From experience you will find it difficult to style your hair naturally if your hair is partially chemically processed. You can always wrap your hair doing the in between stages.

You'll want to cut more and more of the relaxed portion of your hair as it will begin (if it hasn't already) to break off. That is a result of having two types of hair patterns in one space. However, MOISTURIZE!! Your scalp and hair shaft itself, I can't say how important this is. Take a look at this article! It is really informative. I hope it helps you on your journey!
