What is the difference between a squash and a gourd?

I'm looking at squash and gourd iconography in art and need to know if there is a huge difference between the two.

A squash is a type of gourd. But a gourd is not necessarily a squash.

gourds are grown to make organic containers they are not food, they are used for water and wine and sometimes oil,the top is cut off and a cork is used to plug it up.

some
squash looks the same the fruit as well as the plant but the skin is soft and they are part of a very big family of many varieties, coming in al shapes and colours.Gem squash, butternut,to name a couple

Yeah, they are in the same family. How about you can eat squash but not a gourd? That's the first thing that comes to my mind.

Gourds tend to be ornamental while Squashes are always eaten.
