What type of grass and when should I plant it? |
I just bought a house that has lots of tree's in the front yard but no grass. I would like any suggestions on what type of grass I should plant in a shaded area and do I need to wait for spring or can I plant grass seeds now? find a grass mix that meets the needs of your to be lawn (high traffic, sun, shade, water rquirements, etc.) The best time to plant is in the fall, in TX do it in October or November, seed and feed as per instrcutions. Go to Lowes and get whatever grass seed they have that is called sun & shade. I would take a small sample of your soil in a baggie to a garden center or nursery that can analyze it, and have them give you a professional recommendation. Use a "shady mix" grass. Top it with peat moss. Water it daily for 2 weeks. Wait until your high temperature is below 85. Now is best. Go to the garden center and ask for grass seed for shady lawns. They will know what works best in your area. I would use fescue. I will not reseed itself, but works well and stays green most of the year. Once it establishes itself, it looks great. I live in OK and use it under my trees. Looks good when mowed and grows fairly slowly. You might be able to plant it now, the seed is fairly cheap. Might try to plant a little bit now and see how it works. |
