How to grow a blue spruce tree from a seed?

what cones do I get the seeds from, the ones on the ground or do I need to get them from the top of the tree? what then?

The reason so few people do this is because conifers are very very hard to grow from seed. Most of them have complicated stratification needs, which means several freeze/thaw cycles, just the right amount of moisture, etc.

You can get blue spruce seedlings very cheaply from some of the specialty garden suppliers. Unless you want years of waiting and endless frustration, the seedlings are the way to go.
