How often should I be watering my landscape?

live in Austin TX which is a zone 8-9 climate. I have the following trees, shrubs and plants in my landscape.

Cherry Laurels, Magnolia, Leland Cyprus, Sego Palms, Crotons, Crepe Myrtles, Italian Cyprus, Fountain Grass, Box woods, loriapi, jasmine, Oak Trees, and a bunch of other shrubs.

How often should and how long should I be running my automatic sprinklers?

It is best to water once a week and make sure your plants/trees get an inch of water. Watering 6 or 7 minutes a day wastes water and confuses your plants.
Make sure you have at least 3" of mulch, but not right up against your trees. Leave a few inches. Mulch will save even more water.

Plants DO need an inch a water of week to do well. In the Mid West, we start out the season running the systems 20 minutes a zone, three times a week. The best time to water is right at dusk or just at dawn. That minimizes the chance of evaporation into the air and the chance for fungus. Monitor the plants to see if the number of watering events have to be adjusted. Most every thing except the oak is probably in beds. When you fire up the zones in the beds, make sure that there is nothing obstructing the flow of the water to the back of the bed. If there is,you'll have to do some pruning or use extension pipes to raise the heads. Regarding the oak: it's probably in the turf. Keep an eye on it and if you see browning of the tips and it's not insects or disease, you may need to use a root feeder to get additional water to the roots. Move the feeder along the drip line and leave it in as needed.
