What is the difference between pole and bush blue lake beans? |
Obviously one grows in a bush and one grows like a vine, but what I mean is: is there any way to tell the difference? I just got a plant and I don't know which one it is. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell until they really get going. Just be prepared to push stakes into the ground if they start getting really tall. Bush beans mature about a week sooner than the pole variety. I usually trim the top 1/3 off with my pole beans to encourage stronger beans lower on the plant. It saves energy from going into less productive parts of the plant. you wont see any difference when the plant is young. bush beans only grow about 1 1/2 feet tall at best and produce heavily for 2-3 weeks, then they are done. pole beans can easily grow 6-8 feet and climb with their runners. they will produce most of the summer, only with much smaller amounts at any given time. i accidently planted pole beans once, thinking they where bush beans. they grew into the biggest, heaviest mat of a mess i have ever seen. they were all entangled together and you had to try to pick it all up to get any beans. made sure i never did that again. one plant isnt going to amount to anything, no matter what kind it is. How fun...mystery beans! plant them all and put a few stakes here and there. You sure will have a cute garden! |
