What are the rules for kids birthday present giving?

I threw my 13 yr.old daughter a b-day party, and we accepted gifts. 1 of her friends had no party, but girls were getting her presents anyway. Another 1 is having friends go to the movies, but we have to pay. Are we suppose to get her a gift? Both of these girls gave my daughter a present, but if theres no party, am I still obligated to get something. I don't understand how parents can skip the party. Are there new rules? Please HELP!!

Yes, if they are good friends you should get them a gift even if there isn't a party the basic rule i think is:

if they are good friends and you can afford it, i would just give a gift. when kids get older tehy dotn always want a traditional party. maybe the mom of the girl who is taking her friends to the movies cant afford to pay for everyone.
