How do you tell your best friend they have a substance abuse problem?

I need advice on my best friend. She and I have been friends for 15 years and as of lately she's on a downward spiral for drinking and occasional drug use. She doesn't drink during the week so she binges on the weekends. She usually ends up extremely incoherent, making a fool of herself and needing to be taken care of. I'm fearful that she's going to hurt herself or get hurt by someone else. I'm the only one that seems to be willing to man up and talk to her but I can't figure out a way to do it so she'll listen to what I have to say. I know it will be a blow out and I'm willing to risk my friendship to save her life. Any advice would be greatful.

The best way 2 do it is 2 be straight up about it.... Say something like, "As a friend i think.....". But make sure u say as a friend....

it is called intervention. making the arrangements to place her in a susbstance abuse facility, and then nicely, along with friends and family......confront her. give her no options, do this or our friendship is over until you do do it.....cause taking care of her, after she binges, is enabling to continue the lifestyle....if there is no one there to pick her up every time, she will go in. good luck to you both.

tell ur friend that u really care about her and u dont want her to get hurt and if she is still drinking that she could die and u dont want that sit her down and tell the danger about drinking to much its ok to drink alittle but no a lot i . i hope i help u

If she likes to do these things I doubt you will be able to stop her. SHE has to want to change in order to have a chance. The most you can do is be there for her (IF you could) dealing with addiction can take down the innocent...I was almost taken down by an ex who couldnt give up his addiction. FInally I had to dump him. Its NOT a lifestyle you want to be connected to....EVER

You indeed sound like a good friend to try and be so honest with your friend. She may be in denial and state that she doesn't see a problem with how she uses/abuses substances. She may even resent the fact that you are willing to bring it to her attention. But she may take a look at how her life is being managed and be eternally grateful for your help. Either way you will have planted the seed that she may have a problem and this is a big step. You could recommend she take some counselling and/or go to AA or some other program, you may even tell her that you would attend with her for moral support. Regardless of what you attempt to do I for one would just like to give you a pat on the back for caring about another human being this much.

You need to talk to your best friend and confront her about her drinking. Tell her how much it bothers you and how her drinking as affected the people that she loves and cares about dearly. Offer to get her some help, but allow her to make that decision for herself. Be there for her, tell her how much she means to you by helping her get some help for her drinking problem.
