What do you do if you are having an event and you want to invite the mother without inviting the daughter?

I am having a party at my home, we invited the mother who is a sweet, sincere person but her daughter brags about herself all the time and is a spoiled brat (she is too grown - 21 years old to be acting this way and she lives with her mother). We tried every excuse necessary so the woman would not bring her annoying daughter and we can't say we want you to come but not your daughter. The mother deserves to come because she helped us in times of need and she is one of our best friends. Anway, the daughter and mother are both coming to the party....what do I do in order to make things go smoothly? Please Help!!!!

Ooh this is a hard one! I say find someone just as annoying as she is and have them meet each other. This way they can annoy each other and stay out of your hair! Or keep her busy. Play a game, have her do something so that she will not be as annoying. Hope it goes OK for you.

These events can be stressful - in our household there is my Aunt and my MIL we have to keep seperated as they both drink and like to pick at each other - then there is the FIL and the MIL they are divorced and wont be at the same place at the one time etc etc..

The only thing I can suggest now that this daughter is coming is just stay away from her - how big is your party going to be? More than just a few people? If so just excuse yourself from talking to her by saying you have to see some other people - if its just a small gathering it might just be a case of bite your tongue
