I'm a 40 year old woman. Should I really start shopping in the women's department?

I am a 40 year old slim woman. I am single. I spent so much of my teenage years being serious and wasn't into clothes like other teens. In the past 10 years I have developed an interest in clothes. I shop ebay and the juniors departments. The clothes fit me where as the women sizes don't fit without they are size 0 which is hard to find in womens sizing. I love the youthful colors and styles and have had people laugh and gawk at me (none of these people were important in my life and at least they noticed me, I can't say I even noticed what they were wearing. Any way I dress this way everyday except at work where I have to wear an ugly uniform, it's not so ugly and I do follow my style just have to go by the colors required, but an uniform is a uniform and I don't like being a set, I am an individual. Am I crazy?

WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE...40S NOT OLD

If only clothes in the junior department fit u then why not? It's the fitting that's important not the place where u get them. U may want to pay attention to the style, though. It's good that u like to wear colorful clothes, but make sure that the style is not way too young that it's become inappropriate.

I suggest you shop for clothing appropriate for your age. There are lots of places that I'm sure you can find your size for a "woman" not a teen. You might want to check out this site, who knows it may be just the thing you need.

shop where u fit
then brag about being a 40 year old women shopping in pettites or where ever u shop!

there's no set rule that says you have to shop in the misses or womens dept.
as long as the clothes you are buying are fairly conservative,(meaning not buying what an 18 year old would wear) then i don't see a problem. if you've ever watched what not to wear, you'll find that they tell you no miniskirts after 35, and tips like that.
it's a great show, and you'll get a whole lot of info about what's appropriate and what's not

only dress like an old lady if ya want to be an old lady...which you are not..dress how you want to!!!

shop where you want...you only live once!!

I think theres a line between looking nice and your age, and looking like one of those women we laugh at in Walmart for dressing like a she's hanging on to her youth for dear life! I also wear clothes from the junior dept. b/c i don't think theres a middle ground in any dept store where Im from. Junior's clothes sometimes look too young, but misses or whatever its called looks grandmotherly. I wear alot of clothes from Old Navy b/c they have really great clothes that are kinda in the middle. I like to be stylish but i don't want to look like I'm trying too hard. So I know how you feel. Good luck!

You are only forty and that is when life begins. Buy your clothes where ever you feel like and wear colors that make you feel good. Dress for you and be happy.

no your not crazy....as long as it makes you happy, thats all that matters....and if someone says that you shouldnt, they are just jealous :)

I wish I had your problem! I lost over 50 pounds this year and still wear a plus size and I am middle-aged too. I am so tired of all the ugly clothes they have for plus-sized ladies that I squeeze into size 16 skirts and wear bigger tops! I feel if an outfit looks good on you and you feel good go for it! Except some of the really immodest clothing they have out there or mini-skirts. You can look nice and feminine without giving up style. I would stick to the basics and work from there. A nice blue or black skirt to start with and add a nice sweater or blouse. Then you can add a pair of pants to go with the sweater or blouse. I decorate with corsages or scarves to dress the basics. You can then add shoes to match. I think definately women our age should stay away from the short skirts. Good luck!

well i always say dress your age. to an extent. there are alot of women's clothes that look good. i would say no halter tops or anything like that. if you want to wear flares or hip huggers that's fine but don't wear to tight or look to young.

well I would say maybe start shopping in the womens but still get the clothes that you like!..Im sure they arent all TOO old looking..but you probly dont want to be one of those women who ppl think just try to look like they are 18 again?!...or do you?

I don't think you are crazy. I do ask you though, why you are asking us for an opinion..... if you feel comfortable wearing what you do?

It sounds to me like you have a very slim figure and you find the styles fit you better in the teen clothes, hey if you feel good and comfortable in the clothes then it is nothing to do with anybody else what you wear.
I cannot imagine why people would Gawk at you???
Maybe they are envious of your slim figure? Maybe they have the problem?
