What are some good tips on helping a blind family member?

My father has recently just went blind, and we're trying to figure out some great creative ways to help him out. We've put finger nail polish on the microwave numbers so he can count, but what are some other great ways? helppp!

if you can afford it, the whole house has to be fitted to be handicapped-friendly. Meaning its accessible even to your dad. Interior designers and architects can help in this endeavor and my prayers go to you. Good luck and God bless.

Painting the walls that he comes incontact with with textured paint is a good way for him to quickly know at a touch what room he is in...placing a wind chime at the front of the house is a great way for him to be able to walk ou the front and be able to find his way back to the front door. Gravel path ways outside would be a good way for him to know if he's going the right way by the sound it makes whan you walk on it.
Thats all i can think of at the moment , but if i think of some more ideas i'll come back and let you know.

If you have a National Blind Institute Program in your city, contact them and they will be more than helpful with everything single thing you need or require and have so many suggestions to make that will help and benefit your Father...the biggest thing with my brother, who turned blind at 19, was not to take his independence away from him at all, but rather guide him, safely, through all his trials and tribulations...they will ask for help and then you give it to them....one thing for sure...you take their arm when in unfamiliar territory (at their request), don't have them take your arm...that way they lead and you follow with guidance....and softly tell them the way to go....e.g. left or right, or straight...
That is just one example of many, many things that the whole family will learn in time with patience, understanding and any mood swings that may come because of this disability..it is not an easy thing to get familiar with, that of having no sight.
