What's a good type of wine to bring to a potluck holiday party?

There'll be lots of appetizers, and lots of desserts, so I don't really know. I think the hostess like white zinfandel, I like pinot grigio, but I'm thinking I might be better off with a red wine. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If you're bringing the wine to a party, show some respect for the hostess by bringing something nice and unique. Go to your local wine shop - one that actually has a sommelier on staff - and ask for a unique recommendation. I like getting wine for parties that has a unique story ... I have one in particular from this great little winery in Napa that was named after the winery dog, and his picture is even on the label. The sommelier who recommended it to me told me this great story, that I was able to talk about at the event.

So, you get your wine AND a nice ice breaker / conversation piece. Just be sure to get something different, that perhaps no one has ever had before.

There are a couple of wines that rarely go wrong as gifts; Masi Valpolicella for a red - it's cheap, Italian, light, and easily drinkable for even people who aren't fans of reds. For white, I'm a sucker for Rieslings, and really like Stoney Creek, if you can get it. It's a Canadian and tastes light and appley.

Cheap red by the half gallon. After they drink the good stuff, they'll never know the difference. Salud!

iron maden

Bring a bottle of Boone's Farm. Even people that don't drink wine will enjoy that. Also, it will be good for a laugh when you present it to the hostess with a big ribbon around the bottle! Then bring out of bottle of pinot grigio.

Reisling is a popular dessert wine, tastes awesome, and is not too expensive. My personal fav red wine is Rosemount Estate Shiraz - it's sweeter that merlot and goes perfect with almost anything.

White Zinfandel goes superbly with turkey and desserts. You can't go wrong. I recommend Beringer. Doesn't cost much either!

i hate it when people turn up with a bargain bucket bottle,drop it off and head for the good stuff.
take a medium dry white,have a nice time!!
