What is your opinion of weight pulling as a supplemental exercize for pitbulls?

supplemental.

he gets an hour of walks each day, and plays with our other dog.

but am considering light weight pulling once or twice a week for building muscle.

what is your opinion of weight pulling as a supplemental exercize for pitbulls?

i think weight pulling is used mostly for people who want fighting dogs and it is cruel. here is a artical about a pit who was used as bait (sad picture if you cry easy dont look)

you dont know anything about pitbulls ..weight pulling is great for all kinds of dogs its not for fighting....its conditioning and fulfillment.so do research on the topic before you put down a whole sport.P.S. your picture has nothing to do with weight pulling Report Abuse

Weight pulling is a great way to excercise your dog, as long as your careful not to overdo it or push him too hard too fast.

It's a strenous activity and one that should not be entered into lightly. Unless you have been coached on how to properly train your dog to do this you can cause great harm to the dog.

It's not a supplemental activity. It's one where the dog should be examined by a vet and cleared for this type of activity. Pulling dogs are finely tuned athletes and are not a good idea for extra exercise.

it's a dog., and your best friend!! Hello. Are you going to walk around with a weight around your neck? It's a cruel way of weight training for any animal. Take him for a run around a track at college or park. I've seen people with 8 wk old pitts pulling 10 lbs weights plus a heavy chain, the puppy was obviously exhausted. Think healthy, not brut, unless your planning on fighting him in a pitt, there's no reason to put your dog through that. I don't find this supplemental exercise, I call it cruel and unusual punishment. Dogs like to run, chase, and stalk thats there nature!!! Not pulling weights!

Sarah P that's not a pit bull, that's a dogo argentino. Weight pulling is a recognized sport that pit bulls excel in.

It's an awesome thing to do with your bully. You'll know your dog enjoys it, because if he doesn't, he won't pull it. Be sure to do a warm-up run, followed by a cool down walk. Also make sure his body is conditioned for pulling before you begin.

If he gets good at pulling, maybe you should consider entering him in competitions. Have fun with you dog!

Weight pulling is excellent exercise when done right. Your dog should be fully grown before you attempt to have him pull any significant amount of weight. He needs a proper *weight pulling* harness. An ordinary harness won't do; he needs the special one.

Try contacting your local kennel club and asking about weight pulling enthusiasts - there are also weight pulling clubs out there that hold contests and award titles. Also, do a search for weight pulling on Google and you'll find lots of information. Lots of APBT owners do this as a sport, as Pit Bulls excel at this and other athletic activities.

My father raises pit bulls and doesn't necessarily weight train them but he will tie their leashes to very heavy weights and as the dogs get older, they can usually end up pulling the weight around. There has never really been a problem, all of the dogs have turned out just fine! They have great muscle definition in their arms and legs too. Good luck!

Sounds like a great idea. Pittys have the musculature for this sort of exercise and the endless amounts of energy and sense of fun for it too!

I've put a couple of links below that might give you a few ideas, i particularly like the scootering one - fun for you and your dog!
