How to properly introduce dog to a crate? |
We've been having alot of problems with our puppy chewing up carpets and such. We've decided to get a crate at the beginning of the month when we have some extra cash. I know your suppose to let the dog explore the crate herself and get used to it for a long time before locking her in there. Is there anything we will be able to do to help her get used to it? put something that she likes that makes her calm in there with her. a favorite toy or a slightly used shirt of yours should do the trick. let her gets used to going in and out of it before you close it. if she doesn't go near it try trowing just a few treats at the very back of it so she has to go all the way in to get it Introduce the crate as a toy, and throw her ball in there to get her to chase after it. Put her food bowl in there and get her to associate the crate with good things. When you do get to the stage of closing the door, give her treats while she is in there, and if she ever decides to go and sit in the crate without any influence, shower so much praise on her its like shes just picked your lucky numbers for the lottery. She'll soon decide that the crate is a good thing and it wont worry her an ounce. A dog IS just a dog. Put treats and a VERY soft bed in there and praise the dog when it goes in, while it's in and when it comes out. Dog will NOT like it. Would you? Make your dog as comfortable as possible and give LOTS of outdoors exercise! Good luck! Make it a positive experience! Treats, toys, praise...all that good stuff! Teach her to associate the crate with good things! You know honestly, I don't know what the proper why do it is. But my lab ate the entire kitchen floor and we bought a crate and put her in it, instead of leaving her in the kitchen while we were gone. We let her explore it when we brought it home but the next day that was her home. She and her brother are in crates when we aren't home. They run right in it when they know we are leaving. I would give her a blanket and some toys and put her in it. See how it goes. She may bark or whin for a little bit but she will get used to it. Good luck! Throw in some toys or a bone and make it comfortable for them in the crate. Let her find treats in there when she goes in. You can also put her food in there. |
