How do you care for a dog in heat?

This evening I noticed red spots on the floor and come to find out, its coming from my 7 month old corgi. She's got an appointment to get spayed next month. I've never had a female dog before. Besides cleaning up after her & keeping her kenneled, what else do I need to do? Does this mean my male pit will go nuts?

I made an appt to get her spayed a couple of months ago, they were just very backed up.

if she' s in heat now you may have to wait longer than a month from now to get her fixed there is a high risk of hemmorhage at that point they usually wont fix her until all of the swelling has gone down and that can take a while and don't listen to that retart above me you didnt wait way too long to spay her 7 months is still a puppy 6 months is usually the ideal time to spay a dog but it's not set in stone if i were you just buy the diapers and keep her away from male dogs

you bet it means that ur male is goin to go off his rocker! i remember the first time my female dog got in heat all i got was headaches, headaches, headaches, with the constant barking non stop and the howling and ewww the druling over her (literaly) and i had to deal with that cuz im a breeder but the second period is worst if ur not planning to breed then get her spayed i would keep a doggy diaper on her to she spayed

First of all, you waited WAY too long to have her fixed. Secondly, keep her away from other dogs and call your vet to see if you can get her in sooner than a month from now!

You can buy DOG Diapers (we did) and definately keep her away from any males!

You have not waited too long to get her fixed.
You want to wait to get her fixed until she reaches full maturity
which is 2 yrs for dogs if you don't wait until she is mature she will not be complete.
Study up on it and make sure you really want to get her fixed now at so young a age.
I am a breeder I have some knowledge on this kinda stuff.

Take care of it like you would any other dog. Just make sure to keep kenneled and away from other dogs. And yes, most likely your Pittbull will be curious.

Yes.

I would not take the advise of the breeder who said she needed to wait until 2 years-- UNLESS you want to have her breast cancer risk go up significantly.
the surgery is also easier when they are young.
spaying them before their first heat reduces their risk of cancer 100%
spaying them before they have 4 heats significantly reduces the risk
spaying them after 2 years has no effect in reducing their risk and puts them at higher risk.
----------
you are OK to spay her AFTER her heat, if you get it done sooner her uterus will still be bloody and enlarged and make the surgery more risky. Also less discomfort for her when it is not enlarged. the best time would be 2-3 months after heat , but get it done and dont wait until she is older.
in the meantime just keep her away from males== thats all - no other special treatment

This does mean you male pit will go nuts. I would just watch her closely when you let her outside to go potty. Also, my shih tzu just came in heat for her first time. Since I didn't want to keep her kenneled all the time I cut up and old t-shirt and I cut a whole out for her tail and I used safety pins to hold the t-shirt on so that she could come out and run around the house. Good luck!!

We put undies on our dog.

Keep her away from all the males unless you want puppies

hi,its lots of fun hmmmm!!!!
my girl has just come into season for the first time as well, and i have an intire male dog as well he is just bouncing off the walls hehe, once she has stopped bleeding that is when she can get preggers, for smaller dogs it is usually the 11th,-16th day from when it started, so best keep her indoors if possible away from the mail if he is intire, all you need to worry about is make sure she has plenty of water and give her some red meat, for iron, and other minerals which will need replacing, she'll be fine just a bit of a hussy for the next few days, hope this helps
