What is the best way to remove old wall paper glue from walls?

The wall paper stripped off fine but left the old dried paste on the walls. I don't know if the old paper was pre pasted or old fashioned paste. We want to paint the walls, not repaper them.

The product is called DIF, can be found at any hardware store, is great for removing paste. I've been using it for years without fail. Just follow the instructions and have patience.

I've done several old farmhouses

An inexpensive solution used to remove wall paper paste is 9 parts warm water to 1 part liquid fabric softener. Combine water and fabric softener in a large spray bottle and spray on small sections of wall. Scrap softened paste off and proceed to next section.

A fabric steamer will also help soften the paste so you can remove it.

After removing the residual paste, use TSP to clean the walls. The TSP will clean the walls as well as make tiny scores in the wall that will help the paint or primer to adhere to the walls.

I recommend following the cleaning with TSP with a primer then paint. You can find TSP at your local hardware store.

I have found the best way to get rid of wallpaper and it's paper and glue residue to be a 10 to 1 solution of water to liquid fabric softener. You've got to make sure that you wash down the walls afterward of the softener or the new paint or paper will peel. By the way, this method makes your house smell wonderful and is much less toxic.

Very carefully! Sorry but it is the best way to describe I have done 2 now and cannot believe they can send a man to the moon and I am picking this off wall. I took a mist bottle filled up with soapy water sprayed and let set for a few seconds then tried to grab the corner of the glue paper just like the wallpaper and take it off. Dont get the sheet rock paper. Good news most glue is water soluable. Some comes off in little peices some come off like a sheet of paper. And yes this is after the wallpaper is down that is the easy part . The first time I just thought I was doing to much and prime over it and then paint wrong hard to start over. The solutions you buy are just soapy water so I made my own I believe it was Lemon Joy spray liberally and let set then go to work.
