Can earth tones go with dark gray carpet?

I had been planning to redo my living room with dark chocolate furniture and burgandy accents and had everything picked out including paint. Then we had to move suddenly and the carpet in the new house is a dark gray with purplish undertones in certain light. Can a brown couch work with gray carpet? I'm not sure my original plans will look right, and I'm having trouble coming up with a new plan. We can't have black (cats) or white (toddler) and neither of us like the idea of red furniture. We've had blue the last ten years, which prompted my original desire for change. In a few years, I plan to go back to a nice neutral beige carpet, but if I get new carpet now, I won't be able to afford furniture. Suggestions? Thanks!

The color would ABSOLUTELY do well with earthtones. Gray and purple are BOTH "earth" tones!! If you're really just not liking the carpet, you may want to invest in a nice neutral beige area rug. That way the purplish gray carpet is not completely gone, but kept to a minimum. Buying an area rug is definitely more cost effective than replacing all of the carpet in the house.

Just a quick thought: Do you know what lies beneath the carpet? If it's an older home, it may have hardwood. You may want to invest the time in pulling up the carpet. This may not be the case, but it's worth mentioning, and may even be worth seeing!

Blues are fresh, harmonious, and easy to combine. They remind us of vast extensions of sea and sky.

Dark chocolate furniture and burgundy accents will look great with a purplish gray carpet as long as you take care to keep everything else paler. Almost any colours can work together as long as the contrast is right and the accessories/accents are not overlooked. Choose accessories that are very pale colours (white, off-white, extremely pale lilac or icy whitish-blue...) and reflective surfaces like glass, chrome or polished silver... shiny stuff.

Try to find throw pillows for your sofas that include a purple-grey tone on an ivory (or other very pale colour) background. If your burgundy is more a purple burgundy than a red burgundy it will work even better.

Your walls should not be too dark. On paint swatch cards from most manufacturers I would recommend not going darker than the 3rd colour on the card (3rd palest of the colour family). A warm greige (grey-beige) would work wonderfully to pull together your browns, grey, and compliment the warmth of the burgundy. Good luck & enjoy your new home.

Sounds like a perfect choice since reds and their adjacent colors go well with Grey. You mentioned the grey carpet had undertones of purple. If this is a warm grey ie. reds or reddish purple then it would be perfect. If on the other hand the Grey had a bluish cast then it would be a cool Grey. Either way your color scheme would work. Just a little better if it was a warm grey. Besides it's your house and decorate it to please you.

buy a nice size area rug to place in the center ot the room to help cover the gray then you can still get the colors you want

Buy couch and chair covers.
